DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: This class is responsible for diagnosing mechanical problems and repairing a variety of equipment including trucks, construction vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing all mechanic repairs/overhauling engines/clutches/brakes/steering/differentials/transmissions and related mechanical units/parts; disassembling motors; repairing/replacing parts/defective wiring for ignition/lighting systems; re-assembling/adjusting/testing repaired equipment; adjusting/realigning brakes; rebuilding alternators/starters; driving/operating vehicles in performing work assignments/responsibilities. Operates under supervision of the Fleet Shop Supervisor, in accordance with established policies and procedures. Extended hours, call back and on call availability are required. Performs related work as required. Responsibilities

Diagnose mechanical problems and repair a variety of equipment including trucks and construction vehicles Perform mechanic repairs and overhauls of engines, clutches, brakes, steering, differentials, transmissions and related components Disassemble motors and repair or replace parts; fix defective wiring for ignition and lighting systems Re-assemble, adjust and test repaired equipment; adjust/realign brakes Rebuild alternators and starters; drive/operate vehicles in performing work assignments Work under the supervision of the Fleet Shop Supervisor and follow established policies and procedures Maintain extended hours, call back and on-call availability as required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures Knowledge of operation principles of gasoline and diesel engines Knowledge of repair techniques and testing equipment Skill in troubleshooting and correcting defects in motor vehicles and equipment Ability to adapt tools/parts to specific repair problems Ability to interpret repair manuals/diagrams Ability to read and understand technical diagrams/sketches of complex equipment Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited two-year community/technical college with an associate degree/certification in automotive technology and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in automotive repair and maintenance (gasoline and diesel); OR Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma with a minimum of six (6) years of experience as defined above; OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined above. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Functional Employment Test (FET) required Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Class A (CDL) Driver’s License PHYSICAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position Safety hazards: inclement weather, fluctuating temperatures, noise, odors, oils, chemicals, vibration, close physical locations and other hazards associated with automotive work EQUIPMENT OPERATED

Fleet vehicle, manual/power tools, machinery/welding equipment, communication and other equipment as required PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

As required in the Public Works Commission’s Safety Manual GRADE
