Position Overview Public Works Service Worker II – City of Minneapolis

As a Public Works Service Worker II, you will operate a variety of construction equipment, perform skilled labor in the repair and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure, and support a range of public works operations as directed.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Operate heavy and light construction equipment and trucks, including backhoes, loaders, skid‑steer loaders, graders, rollers, asphalt pavers, bulldozers, and crane systems.

Perform daily inspection and maintenance checks on vehicles and machinery, recording conditions and addressing mechanical problems.

Execute routine maintenance on equipment, such as cleaning, greasing, and lubricating, and adjust components as needed.

Operate winches, pumps, hoists, and other mechanical equipment; mount and remove snow and ice equipment.

Collaborate with crew to tag and flag heavy equipment, assist with traffic control, and ensure safety and productivity on job sites.

Consult with foremen on equipment capabilities and recommend equipment rental or resources for site needs.

Serve as a lead worker to coordinate and monitor work progress of a crew or work group when required.

Abide by all safety, OSHA, policy, and work rules and other pertinent employer expectations.

Engage in manual and skilled construction and maintenance tasks, including removal, replacement, or placement of infrastructure such as pipes, manholes, curb and gutter, concrete, and asphalt.

Load, unload, and secure materials and equipment from trucks, utilizing various methods.

Assist with the placement and repair of storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure through pipe, culvert, manhole, and tunnel work.

Maintain streets, alleys, and public spaces; perform snow removal, mowing, and brush trimming as needed.

Install, maintain, and remove traffic signs, pavement markings, parking meter supports, and barricades for events and maintenance operations.

Repair and maintain guardrails, bridges, and related infrastructure.

Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and workplace accident reduction programs.

Perform additional duties as required by Public Works.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements Exposure to all weather conditions, chemicals, high noise, and potential raw sewage. Must stand, walk, push, pull, bend, twist, lift, and maneuver objects up to 100 pounds. Work in confined spaces, on ladders, stairs, and platforms. Possible night, weekend, holiday, and shift work.

Required Qualifications

Age:

Minimum 18 years by application deadline.

Education:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience:

At least one year within the last five years operating two of the following: rubber‑tire tractor (with backhoe), motor grader, asphalt spreader, cable crane, bulldozer, hydraulic crawler backhoe, front‑end loader, or skid‑steer loader.

License / Certifications

Class B (or better) Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake Restrictions; Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of employment.

Proof of a valid CDL must be presented at the Workplace Simulation Test and at hire.

Background Check Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form for a criminal background check and qualification verification. Failure to consent will result in disqualification.

Pre‑Employment Drug and Alcohol Test and Medical Examination Conditional offerees must pass a pre‑employment medical exam (respiratory screening, back screening, hearing test) and drug and alcohol test within the specified timeframe. Non‑compliance will lead to withdrawal of the offer.

Selection Process The process includes training & experience review, Workplace Simulation Test, and a practical exam. A passing score of 80% or higher on each step is required. Candidates may also be selected for interviews based on education, experience, or additional criteria.

Salary Range

Public Works Service Worker II: $40.714 – $44.490 hourly

Employment Type Full‑time, entry‑level.
