Department: Law

Employment Status: Non-Exempt, Chapter 7 Ordinance (Full‑Time, 40 Hours/Week)

Pay Grade: Grade 06 Step 01

Hourly Rate: $22.89 – $31.37

Salary Range: $47,611.20 – $65,249.60 per annum

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Certifications/Licenses Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

SUMMARY The City of Chicopee’s Law Department is hiring a Paralegal who will support attorneys with handling cases in suit, non‑litigation matters, and special projects. Responsibilities include managing individual cases, drafting legal documents, performing legal research, preparing cases for oral arguments and trials, drafting witness and document subpoenas, drafting discovery responses, communicating with other City departments and outside counsel, tracking compliance with litigation deadlines, coordinating meetings, and other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide support to attorneys and staff in drafting various discovery documents and preparing responses to discovery requests.

Analyze returned documents and assist in maintaining litigation case files.

Prepare various draft motions, notices, releases, authorizations, answers, memorandums, subpoenas, and other legal documents to be filed in court.

Coordinate gathering of applicable documents from other City departments.

Assist with tracking deadlines pursuant to tracking orders, hearing dates, responses to pleadings and motions.

Coordinate and/or process subpoenas for records and attendance of employees at deposition and court proceedings.

Coordinate depositions, arbitrations, mediations, court hearing dates, and other meetings for city attorneys.

Maintain schedules for attorneys and coordinate appearances in City cases.

Assist attorneys with performing legal research.

Support all attorneys as needed on non‑litigation matters.

Provide direct litigation support to the attorney assigned to code enforcement in the Housing Court, including coordinating complaints and evidence from the Building Department and the Health Department.

Staff the Mobile Home Rent Control Board to coordinate meetings and take the minutes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of three (3) years of verifiable litigation or law practice experience.

High School Diploma or equivalent (required).

Working knowledge of the legal process, federal laws, Massachusetts general laws, court rules, rules of civil procedure and appellate procedure.

Working knowledge of the principals, methods, materials, and practices of legal research and investigation.

Ability to analyze and assist in the preparation of legal documents and instruments.

Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, municipal officials and the general public.

Paralegal Certificate (preferred).

Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies or Paralegal Studies (preferred).
