Job Title: Refuse Collector I
City of Norfolk, Virginia
Base Pay Range $41,503.00/yr – $45,653.00/yr
Responsibilities
Collect and dispose of waste by operating an automated truck: pick up garbage cans, furniture, tree limbs, etc., from curb; replace damaged trash cans as needed; travel to the transfer station to empty the truck.
Lift bags of yard waste, furniture, and other refuse into collection trucks.
Maintain the truck by filling with fuel, washing, sweeping, and ensuring brakes and backup lights are functioning.
Conduct CDL pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections.
Interact with the public to encourage proper disposal habits and raise awareness of environmental best practices.
Assist with collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, and debris in beach, coastal, and public recreation areas.
Operate light‑duty vehicles (e.g., Kubota) to transport equipment, waste, and supplies safely.
Assist the BEACH strike team in environmental education efforts, including event setup, public interaction, and information dissemination.
Participate in special events and community cleanup campaigns: preparation, execution, and takedown.
Complete basic logs, reports, and documentation as directed.
Maintain cleanliness of public access areas, rest areas, and trash/recycling receptacles.
Assist in collections when the BEACH area is closed or during emergency situations (storms, snow, ice) as determined by the Superintendent.
Qualifications
Six (6) months refuse collection experience or commercial driving experience desired.
Valid CDL Driver’s License.
Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments.
Ability to read and understand written instructions; understand simple processes and routine operation of machines; level of knowledge less than high school or equivalency.
Work Hours Saturday – Wednesday, 11:30 am – 7:00 pm, 40 hours per week.
