Position Description The Social Worker/Behavioral Health Specialist will oversee and provide guidance regarding social-emotional and behavioral health issues that might arise while at camp under the supervision of the Health Director. They will ensure a safe and nurturing environment for all in the camp community, work with campers who need emotional support, and assist in the coordination and care of campers during daily camp life. They provide care and administer treatment in accordance with HIPAA, NYDOH, GSUSA, and ACA standards, demonstrating the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.
Responsibilities
Monitor the emotional health of campers and staff from diverse backgrounds, with support from the Health Director.
Provide support and counseling to campers and staff to promote healthy, responsible choices and resolve issues safely.
Assist in creating and reviewing Camper and Staff Care Plans.
Keep accurate records of visits with campers and staff, maintaining confidentiality per HIPAA.
Coordinate with caregivers and healthcare providers to ensure proper care, escalating concerns as needed.
Work with the Health Director and Head Cook to accommodate dietary or sensory needs.
Maintain communication with the Health Director and Camp Director regarding ongoing concerns.
Intervene to improve relationships and experiences among campers and staff.
Guide youth behavior management techniques to camp staff.
Support placement of campers and staff into appropriate housing.
Report serious incidents immediately and document properly.
Report suspected child abuse to authorities and inform the Camp Director.
Utilize community resources for issues that arise.
Guide campers and staff in emergency situations.
Maintain safety standards and equipment according to NYDOH and ACA standards.
Participate in camp activities, staff training, and team-building exercises.
Model and teach camp expectations regarding hygiene, respect, language, and attire.
Follow policies from staff training and manuals.
Lead training activities as assigned.
Uphold the mission and values of Girl Scouts.
Provide excellent customer service to all camp community members.
Perform other tasks assigned by Camp Leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
Certification or degree in youth development, education, or mental health services (e.g., LCSW, LMHC, SWD, RBT, BCBA, ABA).
Background in psychology or experience with troubled youth, behavior management, TCI, or conflict resolution.
Willingness to be on-call for emergencies, including overnight.
At least 1 year of experience working with youth.
Ability to manage challenging behavioral situations effectively.
Desire and ability to work outdoors with children and adults.
Empathy and trauma-informed care skills.
Patience, humor, integrity, adaptability.
Acceptance of the sleepaway camp environment and long, irregular hours.
Physical strength and endurance for camp activities.
Clearance through Sex Offender Registry and Background Check.
Willingness to prioritize Girl Scouts of Greater New York and Camp Kaufmann.
Preferred Qualifications
Master of Social Work or Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Pediatric experience in residential settings.
Camp experience or interest in Girl Scout programs and youth leadership.
Availability for Summer 2025, including staff training (June 22 – July 5), camp sessions (July 6 – August 8), and camp closing (August 9 – 10). Potential for additional shifts and on-call duties.
Physical Demands Ability to lift 40 pounds, work in a camp setting with good health and stamina, and stand or walk for long periods.
Compensation
$200 - $300 per diem, based on experience and certifications.
Room and board at camp.
Travel costs to/from NYC and off-camp activities.
