UNIT SECRETARY

Job Summary Join UT Southwestern as a Unit Secretary and help enhance patient care and comfort. You will play a critical role in supporting nursing staff, coordinating patient services, and ensuring efficient communication across the department.

Job Duties
Maintain high level of service for both internal and external customers.
Answer phone and ensure patient requests are disseminated appropriately; communicate repeated requests to nursing staff or Charge Nurse as needed.
Accurately transcribe orders, demonstrate medical terminology knowledge, and write legible forms with required dates, times, and signatures; coordinate testing and procedures.
Prioritize "stat" and "now" orders above routine orders; communicate priority orders and incomplete orders to Charge Nurse promptly.
File reports and documents in patient records, thicken charts, and review discharge records as per policy.
Keep unit stocked with supplies, check par levels, order supplies, and monitor expired items; coordinate equipment repairs.
Enter unit charges daily, return rental equipment, and make runs to lab, pharmacy, or central supply.
Communicate appropriately with patients/families, physicians, and staff; provide status reports and alert nurse to unresolved issues.
Follow all established policies, report errors promptly, orient new staff and students, and collaborate with other nursing staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
High School diploma or equivalent; no prior experience required.
Health Unit Coordinator Certification (CHUC) preferred.
Hospital and/or acute care experience preferred.
Schedule Part‑time, Regular; No required travel.
