Job Summary Under the direction of the Director, Academic Advising, the Advising Coordinator is responsible for planning and daily implementation of comprehensive specialized advising services. This includes educational/degree planning, course selection and registration, academic support, resource awareness, and retention and success strategies to increase MCC students’ retention, progression, and time-to-degree completion. The role supervises a team of professional academic advisors, manages an assigned student caseload, and provides advising, registration, and enrollment services. It involves designing and implementing advising strategies, student engagement and communication plans, recruitment initiatives, New Student Orientation planning, and other strategies to improve retention and graduation rates. The coordinator will lead with technology solutions and must demonstrate leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, innovation, and learning of new technologies.
The role includes coordinating advising case management for Guided Pathway and FOI programs, supervising a team of advisors, partnering with campus stakeholders, and ensuring deadlines are met. The coordinator also serves as a resource connecting students to academic support, advising, financial aid, health & wellness services, and other supports. The position develops campaigns for near-graduation stop-out students and coordinates advising during priority registration periods to support retention, persistence, and completion.
Essential Functions Support MCC progress to graduation by providing advising-related services to new and continuing students. This includes leadership, academic advising, program management, data-driven retention strategies, and collaboration across campus.
40% Leadership
Manage day-to-day operations of the assigned Academic Advising Center in collaboration with the Director.
Serve as lead advising coordinator for specific FOI pathways and liaison for proactive advising initiatives.
Coordinate and manage activities of FOI advising programs; supervise advising professionals; set retention goals; oversee the advising team to provide personalized academic guidance.
Design and deliver guidance on academic planning, transfer, career/workforce, and student development needs; coordinate records, reporting, budgeting, and project development with the Director.
Develop, direct, plan, organize, and implement retention and student success strategies; partner with leadership to establish metrics and program health for retention and success.
Utilize data strategy and technology to model retention for in-person and online students.
Oversee student success initiatives, including Student Success Coaching and progress monitoring; participate in Enrollment Management Committee.
Coordinate registration tasks and program health assessments; develop proactive interventions and collaborate with faculty to improve engagement and success.
30% Academic Advising
Provide in-person, phone, virtual, chat, and email advising to current, returning, and Stop Out students on degree programs.
Manage a caseload; guide students on academic, transfer, career/workforce, and development issues; assess resources to meet goals; support enrollment and retention efforts.
Apply advising theories to help students identify goals; engage students through appointments, workshops, and presentations; educate on internships, scholarships, and opportunities.
Advise on degree requirements, academic planning, and registration procedures; monitor progress and provide outreach to at-risk students; track progress using technology.
Identify barriers, coaching on learning strategies, and support self-advocacy; collaborate to develop high-quality student resources and connect students to resources.
15% Program and Event Coordination
Co-manage retention-related programs, workshops, and events; develop and facilitate sessions and presentations for students, faculty, and staff.
Develop communications and marketing strategies for workshops; support recruitment and data-driven improvement of programs.
Serve on CARE Team and collaborate with leadership to retain students.
10% Data, Reporting, and Compliance
Ensure compliance with FERPA, state and district policies; maintain confidentiality of records; prepare reports and support data collection for program evaluation.
Manage data related to retention and academic performance; maintain secure data practices and monitor grants and budgets as required.
5% Other
Serve on executive boards, college and district committees, and perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications A completed Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field from a regionally accredited institution is required. Other qualifications include:
Minimum 3 years of experience in academic advising, student support services, case management, or related higher education areas
Four+ years implementing retention and student success programs
Proven use of proactive student-centered advising strategies
Appreciative Advising certification and/or training
Familiarity with major-specific advising and graduation requirements
Experience with data analysis to inform student success initiatives; proficiency with PeopleSoft and advising tools
Proficient in English; bilingual (Spanish) preferred
