Overview Join an excellent team of researchers at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Computational and Structural Biology Center (CSBC) within the Center of Excellence for Data-Driven Discovery (C3D) of the Department of Structural Biology seeks a skilled Senior Bioinformatics Research Scientist or Senior Computational Researcher to contribute to ligand discovery and drug development efforts.

You will join the ligand discovery team led by Dr. Christoph Gorgulla as the first CSBC member focused on ligand discovery. Collaborating with computational researchers spanning structural bioinformatics, machine learning, and AI, your primary mission is to work with St. Jude groups to implement technologies that identify novel hit/lead compounds for treating various diseases. You will optimize results, work toward new tool compounds and drug candidates, and leverage state-of-the-art computational methods, including structure-based ultra-large virtual screenings, quantum and classical free energy simulations, and machine-learning techniques. The primary ligand discovery platform used will be the VirtualFlow ultra-large virtual screening platform.

Responsibilities

Independently perform basic and advanced statistical analysis, implement algorithms, program across biotechnology platforms, and oversee quality checks.

Design and prepare materials and courses for training on bioinformatics software, databases, computing, data mining, and analysis.

Act as a liaison between end-users, software developers, system designers, and different departments.

Establish protocols or SOPs, evaluate products and solutions, make recommendations, and integrate solutions.

Lead the development, implementation, installation, and maintenance of databases; coordinate data collection and related hardware/software.

Develop programs to assist in data analysis within databases.

Assist in planning, coordinating, and organizing projects across departments; delegate tasks based on priority, expertise, and capacity.

Perform other duties as assigned to meet department and institutional goals.

Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Qualifications Minimum Education and/or Training:

Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, statistics/computer science (with a background in biological sciences or chemistry) or related field.

Master’s degree or PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience:

Minimum Requirement: Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of relevant post-degree work in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, statistics/computer science (with a background in biological sciences or chemistry).

Experience Exception: Master’s degree with 4+ years of relevant post-degree experience (OR) PhD with no experience.

Experience in at least one programming or scripting language and at least one statistical package, with R preferred.

Compensation In recognition of pay transparency laws, St. Jude provides a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The current estimated salary range is $78,000 – $139,360 per year for the Bioinformatics Research Scientist or Senior Computational Researcher role. This estimate is non-binding and may be adjusted based on experience, education, and other factors.
