Overview This position is for a Staff Psychologist in Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The base pay range is provided by the VA and your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience.
Base pay $90,721.00/yr - $168,096.00/yr
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications VHA Health Professionals Trainee applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Psychologist.
Basic Requirements
Citizenship - You must be a citizen of the United States
English Language Proficiency - You must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f)
Education - must meet ONE of the education requirements below
Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed
The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed
For the purpose of meeting this requirement, the term "specialty area" refers to the specific specialty areas recognized by the accrediting body and not to specific job duties that might require special skills
Currently - APA accredits doctoral programs in the specialty areas of clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, or combinations of two or more of those areas
PCSAS accredits doctoral programs in psychological clinical science
CPA accredits doctoral programs in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and school psychology
There are no job assignments in VHA that require the skills of a school psychologist
There is no distinction between the specialty areas (with the exception of school psychology) for eligibility purposes
Or have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and, in addition, successfully complete a re-specialization program meeting both conditions: the program must be completed in an APA or CPA accredited doctoral program and the specialty must be consistent with the assignment
Official transcript and/or certificate documenting completion of the re-specialization program (including an APA or CPA internship) must be provided
Psychologists who completed a re-specialization program and were employed by the VA prior to the standard are considered to have met the educational requirements
Or have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally-accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature
Internships - must meet ONE of the internship requirements below
Professional psychology internship training program that was accredited by APA or CPA at the time and consistent with the assignment
New VHA psychology internship programs in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable if sanctioned by VHA management at the time of internship
VHA facilities that offered full-time, one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are acceptable
Applicants with an internship not accredited by APA/CPA may be considered eligible if currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area consistent with the assignment
Board certification - must be maintained as a condition of employment
License or Certification - Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in the United States or territories or the District of Columbia
Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet eligibility requirements may be considered for a temporary appointment as a "graduate psychologist" at the GS-11 or GS-12 level for up to two years under 38 U.S.C. 7405(c)(2)(B), with supervision required
Grandfathering provisions apply to those employed when the standard was implemented
Grade Determinations: See Education section below. The full performance level is GS-13; the applicant can be selected at GS-11 to GS-13
Physical Requirements: Pre-employment examination or evaluation may be required
Duties
Provides psycho-diagnostic services including assessment, integrative summaries, and treatment planning using appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques
Performs evaluations for veterans with substance use disorders and other mental health disorders
Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including group and individual psychotherapy, behavioral interventions, and brief evidence-based treatments
Consults with Outpatient Mental Health and SUD staff on patient care, program development, and program evaluation issues
Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees
Collaborates with physicians, mid-level providers, and nursing staff in an interdisciplinary team approach
Oversees the establishment of program monitors and outcome measurements within Outpatient Mental Health and SUD using data-driven quality assurance processes
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30 am-4:00 pm
