Responsibilities
Comfortable with emergency situations such as Massive Transfusion Protocols and Emergency Release, issuing uncrossmatched blood according to laboratory approved procedures. Inspects/issues compatible blood and blood products for transfusion, and performs visual and temperature checks on returned blood; disposes of improperly stored/labeled, punctured, outdated, contaminated or hemolyzed blood according to approved procedures. Monitors blood and blood product inventory to ensure adequate supply for patient transfusion; orders blood and blood products when indicated; monitors inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies and notifies Blood Bank Supervisor or Leads when supply is low. Participates in the training and instruction of new MLS hires in the Blood Bank. Performs routine and standardized tests as outlined in the Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedures (ABO/Rh/Antibody Screen, Antibody Identification, Direct Antiglobulin tests, compatibility tests, phenotyping, elution, etc.); completes proper documentation. Performs special methods as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedure and/or Technical Manual to resolve difficulties or multiple antibodies, ABO discrepancies, Antibodies of Undetermined Specificity, incompatible crossmatch; completes documentation. Performs transfusion reaction investigation and workups, testing and documenting according to Standard Operating Procedure. Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required Documented training as defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b) Non-degree semester hours in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science as defined in CLIA 42CFR493.1489(b) required ASCP eligible required Bachelor\'s degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology/medical or clinical laboratory science preferred Associate\'s degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology/medical or clinical laboratory science and experience as defined in CLIA 42CFR493.1489(b) preferred If major is not specified on diploma, transcript required Foreign degree, foreign equivalency documents required Minimum 2 years Blood Bank experience preferred, if applicable New MLS/CLS/MLT/AAS graduates welcome Work Environment
