Job Description GridHawk LLC, The Premier Provider for Utility Services, is seeking a Utility Watch and Protect Technician. The Utility Watch and Protect Technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to utility protection for a variety of utility clients. The Watch and Protect technician will oversee contractors digging on and around gas facilities, and monitor excavation to help prevent damage to critical facilities. This position also works as a field auditor to ensure the safe and accurate practice of Utility Technicians, completing audits and job site standbys to ensure the safety of the contractor and the local public.
Requirements In order to obtain employment with GridHawk LLC, candidates must complete a background check. Company policy requires no violations within the last 5 years. Candidates must also take and pass a DOT drug test.
All employees of GridHawk LLC are assigned the proper technology and work vehicles to perform all work‑related duties.
Tools and Equipment Provided
Company vehicle, laptop, and smartphone
Uniforms and all personal protective equipment
Responsibilities
Compares real‑world conditions to the record documentation to identify errors and omissions.
Verifies location of all client facilities within specified dig extents.
Watches and protects client facilities within a given area as directed by the client.
Understands contractor’s means and methods for subsurface installations.
Monitors and provides surveillance of critical infrastructure where excavations are known to be taking place or will be taking place soon.
Contacts excavators and schedules monitoring with them.
Prevents damage to client facilities by monitoring excavations near critical infrastructure.
Locates and marks underground facilities using industry tools, standards, and methods, including locating devices and utility maps.
Performs ticket audits to ensure locators accurately locate facilities and follow proper marking procedures.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED certificate.
Valid driver’s license.
Minimum 1 year of experience in the locating industry.
Essential Skills and Experience
Minimum 1 year of experience in the locating industry.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to work smoothly with citizens, company, contractor representatives, and customers.
Good organizational skills to handle many varied tasks at once.
Knowledge and understanding of safe worksite practices.
Experience with the construction and installation of below‑grade infrastructure.
Experience working within and utilizing existing utility standard designs.
Experience with complex urban underground utility infrastructure.
Experience serving as firm/client liaison.
Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.
Experience with the use and basic maintenance of industry standard locating equipment.
Experience using basic communication and tech devices.
Physical Requirements
Capable of moving about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways.
Capable of lifting to 50/75 lbs.
Ability to stand, walk, kneel, or sit for extended periods.
Hand‑eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various measurement, locating, and testing instruments.
Work Environment
Work safely outside in all weather conditions year‑round.
Occasionally work in excavation areas and roadways.
Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is occasionally moderate to loud.
