Major Responsibilities
Acts as a resource to employees and students, including training/orientation, providing day-to-day work direction, and input on performance. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity, maintains staffing levels, directs efforts and provides guidance on complex issues.
Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection of new employees, staff development, providing performance feedback, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale.
Assists in interpreting department policies and procedures, advises and updates staff on procedural changes. Identifies performance improvement opportunities, facilitates change, and monitors inventory levels and labor productivity while assisting with department resource management.
Serves as a technical resource, role model and/or preceptor for students and staff. Facilitates clinical problem solving and collaborates with other departments to educate on managing patients after procedures and imaging department processes.
Operates angiographic and ultrasound equipment to perform procedures for inpatients and outpatients. Performs and demonstrates proficiency in all listed procedures at the assigned facility, including vertebro/kyphoplasty, carotid and AAA stenting, cerebral intervention, embolization, coiling/stenting, angiograms, chemotherapy and thera sphere embolization, cryo and RF ablation, and graft placement.
Assists with interventional and surgical procedures as a scrub assistant, with knowledge of equipment options while coordinating with attending and resident physicians. Serves as a resource on procedural equipment options.
Acts as a scrub assistant on interventional and surgical procedures, ensuring images are of diagnostic quality. Post-processes images as directed and correctly labels images with patient name, MRU number, and scan location/position.
Oversees maintenance of records in accordance with regulatory agencies and enters patient and study information into the radiology information system, documenting billing codes for accurate charges.
Identifies equipment performance issues and conducts quality assurance tests and calibration procedures. Reports malfunctions and evaluates new products/equipment.
Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, including lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care and understands growth and development across the life span; assesses patient data to identify age-specific needs in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
Radiographer license issued by the Illinois Dept of Nuclear Safety
Registered Technologist (RT) registration issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) — needs to be obtained within 6 months
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) — needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader determines it is not required
Education Required
Advanced training beyond High School that includes completion of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology
Experience Required
Typically requires 5 years of experience in an Interventional Radiologic Technologist role
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Advanced knowledge in radiology positioning and techniques
Advanced knowledge of basic radiation safety and aseptic techniques
Advanced knowledge of anatomy including vascular and/or cerebral
Advanced knowledge of embolic and thrombolytic materials, physiologic monitoring equipment, and surgical scrub technique to assist the provider
Advanced knowledge of accreditation policies and procedures to facilitate departmental accreditation
Proficiency in suturing vascular access sheaths
Demonstrated leadership skills such as delegation, team building, prioritization, problem solving, and decision making
Ability to act as a role model and hold staff accountable to service commitments
Ability to work independently
Excellent communication, interpersonal and patient service skills for working with a diverse group of providers, patients and staff
Intermediate computer skills
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders frequently throughout the workday
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lbs over the head; carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance
Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with assistance
May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards and to blood and body fluids; personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary
Must have clear speech, vision, and hearing; operates all equipment necessary to perform the job
