Overview
Histology Laboratory Technician role at WVU Hospitals — Ruby Memorial Hospital. Responsibilities include basic laboratory functions such as specimen processing, customer service, and data entry in support of patient care; collecting, processing, storing, and transporting blood, body fluids, and tissue specimens; and performing clerical tasks (faxing, copying, mailing reports, answering phones). Responsibilities
Prepare specimens to perform basic diagnostic procedures contributing to accurate patient results. Operate laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing in accordance with standard operating procedures. Prepare reagents and solutions required for specimen processing and testing per SOPs. Perform quality control procedures under supervision to verify reliability of reagents and equipment. Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation. Report test results with minimal errors and in a timely manner. Utilize time, materials, and resources efficiently to balance workload and patient care. Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times, adjusting workflow as needed. Communicate unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor/Manager. Report unusual medical/technical problems or unusual patient results. Perform clerical duties to support laboratory operations as needed. Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
For West Virginia Labs: High School Diploma or Equivalent; WV PoC License within 90 days of hire, as applicable by location. For Ohio and Maryland Labs: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Preferred Qualifications:
Phlebotomy Certification (CPT). Experience:
Six (6) months of Phlebotomy, Lab Assistant or Cytopreparatory experience. Physical Requirements
Heavy/physical work including lifting and carrying 40+ lbs; ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach during shift. Working Environment
Possible unsupervised access to restricted areas containing medications and patient information. May require travel between facilities/buildings. Shift may vary based on departmental needs. Skills And Abilities
Proficiency with computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator; ability to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; able to operate fax machines and printers. Additional Job Description
The successful candidate will work primarily in a laboratory setting with responsibilities including restocking supplies, preparing processing and embedding areas for the next day, organizing and distributing slides to pathologists, performing routine instrument maintenance, filing blocks and slides, scanning slides for Digital Pathology, and participating in Quality Control and Quality Assurance. Routine handling of biohazardous and chemical hazardous materials with strict safety protocol adherence and PPE use is required. Additional duties include retrieving tissue cassettes from the Gross Room and loading onto tissue processors. Follow departmental SOPs and policies to ensure consistency and compliance. Strong visual acuity is essential for reading slides and cassette labels. Other tasks may be assigned to support operations. A background in medical terminology, biology, anatomy, or chemistry is preferred; the role suits organized, dependable individuals who value high standards in laboratory practice. Schedule
