Float Nurse , you will support students and staff across RSU 21 by providing consistent, high-quality nursing services district-wide. You will collaborate closely with the Assistant Superintendent, school-based nurses, and health professionals to ensure continuity of care, compliance with school health protocols, and support for public health initiatives.
Responsibilities
Provide direct nursing care to students and staff in assigned buildings, including medication administration, first aid, and chronic illness management Maintain accurate documentation of health visits, treatments, and communication with families and providers Support compliance with state immunization laws, hearing/vision screenings, and medical protocols Serve as the lead coordinator for monthly RSU 21 school nurse meetings in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent Coordinate medication orders and nursing supply needs across schools Assist in developing and updating Individualized Health Care Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) Communicate professionally and compassionately with students, families, staff, and community health providers Provide health education and guidance to students and school staff Travel regularly between school buildings as needed for coverage and support Respond to medical emergencies and follow RSU 21 emergency protocols Support public health and safety initiatives as directed Formulate annual budgetary estimates for nursing supplies, equipment, and related services during district budget preparation
Qualifications
Required:
Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) issued by the Maine State Board of Nursing Valid Maine Department of Education School Nurse (524) certification Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification Minimum of two years of professional nursing experience Valid Maine DOE Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) Valid Driver’s License
Preferred
Experience in school, pediatric, or public health nursing Familiarity with student health software such as PowerSchool, Google Suite (Sheets, Gmail, etc.), and other health-related platforms Strong organizational and communication skills Experience in coordinating meetings and ordering medical supplies

Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds Manual dexterity for nursing procedures and operation of medical equipment Visual and auditory ability to assess and respond to health needs Ability to move between locations throughout the day and respond to emergencies
Work Environment
School-based settings with exposure to children and adolescents Frequent travel within the RSU 21 district to cover school nurse absences and provide support May involve exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids Requires independence, flexibility, and effective communication in a fast-paced school environment
