Job Summary Patient Biller 3 – UC Davis Health Informatics (UCDHAS Building, HSP165). Clinical responsibilities revolve around claims billing, follow‑up on claim denials and outstanding accounts receivable within the Medi‑Cal Unit of the Professional Billing Group.

Key Responsibilities

25% – Claim Preparation

5% – Special Projects as Assigned by Unit Supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent work experience or training

Follow‑up payer billing experience and history of successful payer denial appeals

Experience with government and third‑party payors, including current regulations, time limitations and procedures

Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to write clearly and concisely for internal and external correspondence

Knowledge of Medicare, Medicare Risk, Tricare and VA Plans

Extensive knowledge of Medi‑Cal, CCS and Medi‑Cal Managed Care Plans

Analytical skills to assess account balances and determine further action

Knowledge of medical terminology to correlate reports to actual charges and determine appropriateness of denials

General knowledge of credit and collection practices

Knowledge of basic accounting practices

Knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD‑9/10) policies related to medical billing

Math skills to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide

Ability to read and comprehend department policy, internal and external correspondence

Proofreading skills to identify and correct own errors

Communication skills to respond to account inquiries, in person and over the telephone, and to interact with internal and external customers

Ability to work independently, cooperatively and constructively with employees and administration

Ability to work accurately and quickly under pressure to meet deadlines established by the department, government programs or private insurance carriers

Flexibility in a quickly changing environment

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; organize and prioritize tasks

Keyboarding skills to operate computer terminal and PC, prepare internal and external correspondence, and prepare forms

Ability to operate standard office equipment including photocopier, fax, and calculator

Ability to organize and maintain accurate files on patient financial information; file in alphabetical, numerical, and chronological order

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Two+ years experience in Government billing and follow‑up

Extensive knowledge of medical billing/follow‑up/reimbursement requirements for government programs, private third‑party insurance and private individuals

Solid working knowledge of Epic Professional Billing Resolute

Ability to analyze and interpret various types of Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and Remittance Advice (RA)
