The City of Springfield is accepting applications for the classified position of

Certified Electrical Inspector !

This position entails skilled work in securing and maintaining compliance with local and national codes and regulations governing the installation of electrical/heating systems and allied equipment.

Work involves performing inspections on industrial, commercial, and residential installations. Work also includes issuing electrical and heating installation permits. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official; within established codes, regulations, and technical guidelines.

Responsibilities

Secures and maintains compliance with codes and regulations governing the installation of electrical and heating systems and allied equipment.

Inspects materials and methods used; examines junction boxes, conduit, conductors, furnaces, air conditioning systems, and refrigeration units.

Conducts difficult and complex inspections, including industrial, commercial, and multifamily construction.

Checks blueprints, wiring diagrams, plans, and sketches prior to issuance of permits for proposed electrical and heating installations; reviews wiring diagrams to determine conformity to established safety factors and code and ordinance requirements; recommends approval of plans or discusses with engineers, contractors, builders, or owners any modifications to be made in plans in order to conform to requirements.

Notifies electric company to supply power after final approval.

Prepares and maintains necessary records.

Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license

Graduation from high school or vocational school, thorough experience as a journey-level electrician, and considerable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining, and operating a variety of electrical and heating installations, equipment, and appliances; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Considerable knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances and of the stages in construction where such faults and defects are most readily ascertained and remedied.

Considerable knowledge of laws and regulations governing electrical and heating installations.

Familiar with a wide spectrum of electrical installations (including but not limited to single-phase, three-phase, and solar electrical systems).

Ability to detect and locate defective electrical and heating installations and to ascertain the stage of installation when defects are most easily found and remedied.

Ability to understand and work from construction and wiring plans, blueprints, drawings, and diagrams.

Ability to enforce regulations.

Ability to contact building owners, contractors, craftsmen, and others.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Support a workplace culture of respect, engagement, and accountability.

Possession of a valid Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Safety Inspector issued by the State of Ohio within three (3) years from the date of appointment.

Applicants who do not possess a valid Certificate of Competency but who have a minimum of five (5) years of verified commercial electrical experience may be considered for appointment. Such candidates shall be required to obtain an interim Certified Electrical Inspector certification, inclusive of both residential and commercial operations, within thirty (30) days of hire.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

Ability to stand, sit, or walk for extended periods

Must be able to stand, walk, use hands to handle, or feel; reach hands and arms, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Ability to navigate job sites

Must be able to effectively navigate inspection sites that can be dirty, cluttered with tools, materials or debris.

Inspector may have to climb ladders or many flights of stairs, or crawl in tight spaces.

Ability to drive and travel locally to job sites for inspections.

Ability to perform routine physical tasks related to program administration
