General Summary The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) Hospitalist works independently under a supervisory agreement with an OB‑GYN physician(s) to provide specialty healthcare for women in the hospital setting to include physical exams, diagnosing, treating and managing labor and delivery. Focused care on, labor and delivery, and immediate postpartum care. The Midwife Hospitalist works in a team‑based, patient‑centered care environment, in accordance with established protocols, practices and standardized guidelines.

Responsibilities

Collaborates, and consults with Bayhealth OB‑GYN and Family Practice physicians in accordance with practice guidelines and nurse‑midwifery regulations. This includes evaluating patients in the OBED and triage, irrespective of gestational age, if it is within the scope of practice.

Takes part in initial evaluation of all L&D patients, monitors course of labor and delivery, advising on proper health practices, taking tests as appropriate, and reporting any complications to the obstetrician.

Prepares patients and their partners for delivery; trains mothers‑to‑be in exercise, breathing, and relaxation techniques. Provides instructions in breast‑feeding if requested.

Attends and reassures patient throughout the course of labor, monitors the fetus condition, administers medications, notifies physician of prolonged labor or complications indicating need for possible surgical intervention.

Delivers infant and checks mother and child to ensure that they are responding normally.

During postpartum period, visits mother and child to give additional instruction in feeding and care of the newborn.

Conducts classes for patients and family members concerning pregnancy, delivery, and proper childcare.

Conducts classes for nursing students so they may assist new mothers.

Provides advice on family planning and performs gynecological services.

Participates in performance improvement activities.

Participates in continuing education activities and obtains CEU’s necessary to maintain state licensure and prescriptive authority.

Adapts to changing demands of workplace.

Demonstrates the ability to interact with and contribute to professional development of peers and other healthcare providers.

Assesses need for referral to other healthcare providers.

Participates in labor and delivery coverage.

All other duties and special projects as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience

Education:

Master Degree MIDWIFERY; Graduate of an accredited midwifery program with certificate of nurse‑midwifery.

Credential(s):

Midwife Practitioner; Certified Midwife; Or equivalent certifying board or registry.

Basic Life Support; Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support

Experience:

Preferred: One (1) year experience as a Midwife in a private or hospital setting.
