AdventHealth Division AdventHealth Tampa is a faith-based not-for-profit 626-bed tertiary-level acute care hospital. The hospital provides services across cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience, digestive health, orthopedics, women’s services, pediatrics, oncology, endocrinology, bariatrics, wound healing, sleep medicine and general surgery. The Kiran C. Patel Research Institute leads clinical and academic research across several disciplines. The role you’ll contribute:
The Oncology Data Specialist Certified (ODS-C) is responsible for improving quality and outcomes for the Cancer Institute across the Central Florida Division. The ODS-C completes casefinding, abstraction, longitudinal patient follow-up, and other activities to meet standards set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) and the Florida Cancer Data Systems (FCDS). The ODS-C ensures all clinical elements reflect care provided by AdventHealth for accurate state, federal, and public reporting. The ODS-C reviews patient diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes across the care continuum and alerts leadership to potential discrepancies in documentation or care variation as part of ongoing performance improvement. The ODS-C participates in continuing education to stay current with changes in the cancer industry related to coding and compliance. The value you’ll bring to the team:
Identify potential clinical variability or documentation discrepancies that diverge from national guidelines and outcome measures; escalate trends to leadership for timely intervention and feedback to front-line clinicians. Use critical thinking and independent judgment when conflicting clinical information is present to determine appropriate data element categorization and outcomes; may include clinical inferences to accurately capture required metrics. Track cancer patients longitudinally throughout the continuum at required intervals to maintain follow-up and meet regulatory deadlines (e.g., 30 days, 6 months, 1 year). Obtain follow-up via phone, physician offices, written communication, or other sources. Maintain a professional work environment focused on accuracy and productivity; complete independent validation of abstraction before registry submission; manage multiple priorities to meet registry harvest deadlines. Seek opportunities to maintain clinical expertise and incorporate latest cancer registry developments and national guidelines; attend educational sessions, registry conferences, and training as appropriate. Participate in Quality Assurance peer review as reviewer and reviewee; timely correction of abstractions based on edits or additional information to meet registry guidelines. Participate in special projects or initiatives to improve cancer institute outcomes. Adhere to hospital policy for patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines. Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you’ll need: Completion of education program and/or work experience required for Oncology Data Specialist Certified, as defined by the National Cancer Registrars’ Association. Associate degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management or 2 years cancer registry abstraction experience. Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management. 2+ years cancer registry abstraction experience. Current and valid Oncology Data Specialist certification. Job Details
