Overview DOC Mental Health Counselor SW/C II Gender Affirming Care position in the Colorado Department of Corrections located in Sterling, Colorado.

Responsibilities

Provides professional mental health services to inmates including formal and informal evaluations, diagnostic assessments, gender affirming care and clinical interventions.

Ensures accurate Information System mental health needs level codes including Psychiatric and Developmental Disability needs levels.

Provides group, brief and individual therapy and crisis intervention, and participates in 24-hour Mental Health On-Call rotation.

Assures emergency and non emergency transfer for inmates experiencing acute mental health needs.

Provides clinical direction to non clinical staff in mental health care and treatment of inmates.

Ensures continuity of care by making appropriate referrals and providing necessary information and documentation for receiving units facilities or agencies.

Documents handwritten and electronic records to provide comprehensive inmate mental health records.

Monitors inmate treatment and addresses inmate concerns through counseling and direction.

Promotes safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment through observations and contraband control.

Informs supervisor of safety and security violations and attends assigned training programs including self-defense to ensure self-protection skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, social work, psychology, or marriage and family therapy. Attach transcripts showing name of the institution, degree, and date conferred.

Possession of a current valid permit or license from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies as one of the following: marriage and family therapist candidate, licensed marriage and family therapist, licensed professional counselor candidate, licensed professional counselor, licensed social worker, clinical social worker, psychologist candidate, or psychologist will substitute.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's or doctoral degree in a mental health field from a CACREP, CSWE, AAMFT COAMFTE, or APA accredited program.

Licensure eligible as LP C, LCSW, LMFT, or licensed psychologist.

Experience providing mental health treatment in a correctional environment.

Required Competencies

Ability to provide professional mental health treatment to inmates.

Ability to work independently and participate in 24-hour on-call rotation.

Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate across facility programs and external agencies.

Ability to maintain comprehensive clinical documentation and required licensure.

Ability to work with a diverse population of inmates and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently and create accessible documents following plain language guidelines.

Self-control, resilience, and ability to handle stressful potentially violent situations.

Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and observant during shift and tolerate stress and confinement.

Conditions of Employment

Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record and ability to operate a state vehicle as required.

High school diploma or GED; no felony convictions; legal eligibility to work in the United States; ability to pass background checks and complete required training including Defensive Tactics; willingness to travel.

TB screening is required for all new employees.

Documentation of transcripts and licenses must be uploaded; foreign transcripts must be evaluated for US equivalency by a NACES evaluation service if used unofficially; SB 23-058 allows redaction of age and birth information on certifications.

Background investigation requires at least 10 years of current work experience unless more recent relevant experience is provided; failure to provide may delay the process.
