Senior Transportation Surveyor – Geospatial Unit
Department of Transportation – Caltrans. Classification: SENIOR TRANSPORTATION SURVEYOR (CALTRANS). Salary range: $11,437.00 – $14,315.00 per month. New-to-state candidates will receive the classification minimum salary or the alternate range as applicable. Final filing date: November 15, 2025. Positions: Multiple. Work location: 464 W 4th St., San Bernardino, CA 92401. Telework: Hybrid. Job type: Permanent, Full Time.
Responsibilities
Perform a wide variety of surveying functions under the direction of the Supervising Transportation Surveyor.
Support project delivery, respond to public requests, and maintain records retention.
Manage and update geographic information system (GIS) data and other relevant technology.
Operate state vehicles; a valid driver’s license is required.
Conduct field work in San Bernardino and Riverside counties; travel may be required.
Minimum Requirements
Possession of a valid California Land Surveyors’ License. (A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors prior to January 1, 1982 satisfies this requirement.)
Valid driver’s license for operating state-owned or leased vehicles.
Eligibility to sit for the state’s Senior Transportation Surveyor examination (or be listed on the examination list for new-to-state employees).
Required documents (application, resume, transcripts, license copies) to be submitted on time.
Working Conditions The position is based in a climate‑controlled office with occasional field visits and project evaluations at locations in the metropolitan area or remote sites. Workers may be exposed to traffic, heavy equipment, weather extremes, noise, dust, uneven terrain, hazardous materials, and hazardous chemicals. Protective clothing and personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, safety shoes, eye/hearing protection, respirator equipment) are required. Night work may be required with artificial lighting. Telework may be available at the discretion of Caltrans. Business travel may be required.
Desirable Qualifications Knowledge and experience with survey datums, the State Plane Coordinate System, survey control networks and adjustments, geographic information systems, photogrammetric/remote sensing methods, and quality control/assurance practices.
