Commercial Electrical Inspector
Location: Los Angeles, CA Base pay range: $12,000.00/hr – $155,324.00/hr Description
Proof of Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training within the last 4 years. Must be able to work any assigned shift – day, swing, or night – as required by the contractor’s construction schedule. Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of electrical and IT systems across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications. Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders. Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly document the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner. Verify contractor compliance with local and national electrical codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72) and LAWA‑specific standards. Track and document time‑and‑material work, field changes, and job quantities. Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values. Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third‑party agencies as needed. Inspect electrical installations including underground utilities and duct banks, high‑voltage switchgear and electrical panels, conduit racks and grounding systems, interior and exterior lighting, fire life safety systems, electrical shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures, and breaker coordination. Inspect IT infrastructure installations such as low‑voltage systems (voice/data, security, access control), door card readers, security cameras, public address systems, and communication cabling and equipment rooms. Qualifications
High school diploma (or equivalent). At least 3 years of experience performing electrical/IT inspections, including airfield lighting. ICC certification as Commercial Electrical Inspector. Proof of NFPA 70E training within the last 3 years. Training and knowledge of NFPA‑70, 70E, and 72. Fall protection and harness training. Experience as an electrician at the journeyman level, focusing on installation and repair of electrical systems in public works, institutional, commercial, or industrial settings. Experience overseeing compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects. Involvement in complex projects requiring coordination with contractors, engineers, and city officials. Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies, ensuring all aspects of construction meet required standards. Openness to learning prescriptive items required by the agency. Strong understanding of diverse code requirements. Excellent communication and time‑management skills. Hardware/Software Knowledge
Knowledge of project management and inspection‑document control software (e.g., MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam). Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic contract documents efficiently, including change orders, submittals, RFIs, and other inspection documents, with minimal supervision.
