Overview
Coho Technology Solutions is seeking a Boiler Plant Operator who will independently provide support to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the execution of NAVFAC Washington’s broad and diverse mission of facilitating inter-governmental operational requirements. This position will provide boiler plant operator labor support to various locations within the NAVFAC Washington Area of Responsibility performing various tasks/services outlined below. This role is a 1st Shift (8:00am-4:00 P.M.) with a rotating day off schedule. Hiring location NSA, Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities
Operates all equipment in a boiler plant to produce and control the amount of steam necessary to meet demands. Ignites fires, puts boilers in service, and closes down boilers. Periodically makes rounds of the plant to visually check equipment to ensure it is operating properly. Maintains constant observation of flow meters and charts to determine steam production, demand satisfaction, and fuel usage. Fires up to take boilers off the line. Determines whether to up or lower fires in boilers, use of pressure reducing valves, and when to start or stop water pumps. Adjusts firing controls, fuel feeds, and air drafts for best combustion efficiency. Operates auxiliary equipment such as pumps, water heaters, fans, and de-aerating equipment. Collects boiler water samples, performs prescribed tests, and determines chemical feed for water treatment and corrosion control. Maintains observation for defects and reports or repairs malfunctions. Follows standard emergency procedures until issues are corrected. Maintains logs, records, and other plant data as required. Performs routine operational maintenance (e.g., cleaning burners, lubricating moving parts, packing valves and pumps, cleaning oil strainers). May locate and repair limited electrical problems in oil burning controls and safety devices. Operates various types of air conditioning and cooling systems; starts, stops, and adjusts equipment; regulates refrigerant, water temperatures, and pressures. Tours the plant for minor repairs, oiling and greasing, thawing frozen valves, replacing fuses, and defective recording devices. Maintains a log of plant equipment and keeps machinery and spaces clean. Has knowledge of the location and function of all equipment controls, meters, and gauges; can determine appropriate action to meet complex demands. Knows prescribed tests and chemicals to test and treat boiler water. Understands drawings and circuit diagrams to locate defects and perform minor repairs. Understands fuel types, chemical reactions involved, and proper fuel-air ratio for efficiency. Has knowledge of maintenance requirements and procedures for controlling pollutants. Independently plans and carries out work in accordance with operating methods and procedures. Work may involve complex determinations due to steam/high-temperature water production; adherence to operating techniques is checked through occasional observation. Work schedules align with Government operating hours; shift work including weekends and holidays may be required. Requirements
Education:
Boiler operator must have a Class 1 Boiler Operator License in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C., or a Class 1 Boiler Operator License with ASOPE or NIULPE. Experience:
Minimum six (6) months of experience operating large (100 tons or more) air conditioning and/or refrigerant systems, or two (2) years as an air conditioning equipment mechanic helper or apprentice. Demonstrated knowledge of boiler plant repair, installation, assembly, and troubleshooting. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and guidelines used in boiler plant operations. Ability to exercise dexterity and safety in using tools and equipment. Ability to work with minimal supervision and perform preventive maintenance. Ability to work safely in confined areas around industrial equipment and support equipment (pumps, water heaters, fans, UPVs, etc.). Ability to perform work requiring moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Ability to carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally more with assistance or equipment. Ability to work in environments with high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes.
