Overview
Under general supervision, is responsible for conducting inspections of electrical service installations, construction, maintenance, and repair work for conformance with governing codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances; performs related duties as required. (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Responsibilities
Conduct inspections of the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical conductors, fittings, devices, light fixtures, heat or power service equipment, signs, appliances and other apparatus inside or running to buildings or structures for conformance with governing codes, requirements and relevant ordinances. Inspect electrical construction work completed or in progress to ensure that the methods, techniques and materials used are in conformance with approved plans, relevant codes, requirements and ordinances. Review electrical work in the field with approved construction plans for conformance with the various electrical code requirements, standards, and ordinances; check buildings’ electrical construction and maintenance work to ensure that the proper permits were issued. Investigate complaints of improper electrical wiring, construction, repairs or maintenance work and report findings to supervisor or the appropriate personnel. Interpret, respond and provide information to architects, engineers, contractors and/or property owners concerning compliance and conformance with electrical code requirements, standards and relevant ordinances. Notify contractors, property owners, architects and other applicable personnel of defective or substandard work by issuing rejection slips or notices. Assist and/or cooperate with Fire Prevention personnel by checking the performance of fire detection and prevention systems; ensure electrical wiring construction, installation, repairs and maintenance are safe and conform to applicable safety standards and requirements. Collect and gather data and evidence to assist in the prosecution of individuals that persist in violating applicable electrical codes, requirements and relevant ordinances. Attend required training sessions or classes to maintain a valid certification as an Electrical Safety Inspector; stay abreast of ongoing changes in the electrical field. Report on inspections daily and maintain applicable logs, records, and files concerning inspection activities. Prepare correspondence and/or consult with builders, contractors, architects, property owners and other applicable personnel on matters concerning inspection activities. Operate City vehicle to travel to and from inspection sites. May review and approve construction documents related to electrical systems for compliance with governing codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances. May give testimony in court. Qualifications and Certifications
Possession of a valid State of Ohio certification as a Level Three (3) Electrical Safety Inspector Specialization issued by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards. Substitutions: A valid State of Ohio certification as a Level Two (2) Residential Code Official Commercial Trainee issued by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards AND two (2) years of work experience as a certified Level Two (2) Residential Code Official Commercial Trainee may substitute for the above referenced certification. When a valid State of Ohio certification as a Level Two (2) Residential Code Official Commercial Trainee is substituted, a valid State of Ohio certification as a Level Three (3) Electrical Safety Inspector Specialization must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Some positions may require possession of a valid State of Ohio certification as an Electrical Plans Examiner Specialization in order to review and approve construction documents related to electrical systems. Possession of a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate. Substitutions: A letter of interim approval as an Electrical Safety Inspector from the State of Ohio may substitute for the above referenced certifications, or a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee Certificate AND six (6) years of experience as a journeyman electrician or comparable experience may be substituted for the Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate. When either substitution is used, a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
