Job Summary Under the direction of the Fleet Services Technical Staff Supervisor, the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician performs operational level heavy duty vehicular and equipment maintenance and repair duties.

The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician inspects, maintains, repairs, diagnoses, adjusts, and replaces mechanical and electrical components on University-owned vehicles and equipment. Vehicles and equipment maintained include passenger sedans, light duty trucks, vans (both passenger and cargo), medium duty and heavy duty trucks, fire and police vehicles, passenger transport buses, tractors and landscape maintenance equipment, street sweepers, standby generators (1-kw to 150-kw), and other vehicles and equipment used in daily operations. Systems and sub-systems include engine, transmission, ignition, fuel delivery, charging and starting, exhaust, electrical, drive-train, braking, air conditioning, steering, suspension, and hydraulic systems.

The incumbent will also perform fabrication and welding duties, operate and maintain shop tools and equipment, and document work performed. Welding may include TIG, MIG, Arc, and Fuel/Gas welding, cutting, burning, and shearing of steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast aluminum.

Responsibilities

65% - Maintenance/Repair/Metal Fabrication: Major repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including major system overhauls; maintain emission control systems; work with gasoline, diesel, propane, natural gas, and electric power sources; read blueprints and perform metal fabrication as directed.

15% - Diagnostic: Inspect vehicles/equipment to determine corrective action; perform drivability diagnosis of computer-controlled systems; perform repairs cost-effectively.

10% - Equipment Operation: Operate vehicles and equipment during maintenance/repair; use engine analyzers and emission analyzers; operate shop tools and welding/fabrication equipment.

10% - Record Keeping: Prepare maintenance and repair records; prepare work orders reflecting time and materials.

Required Qualifications

Journeyman level experience and skill in automotive heavy vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.

Experience with tools and special tools used in performing job duties; ability to perform welding and fabrication operations.

Knowledge in the use and operation of diagnostic equipment.

Ability to inspect vehicles/equipment for maintenance needs and perform necessary repairs.

Ability to safely operate University-owned vehicles and equipment.

Ability to work independently and with others with minimal supervision; ability to identify and report hazardous conditions; strong time management and customer service skills.

Interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers and diverse groups effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience completing advanced welding and fabrication projects (TIG, MIG, Arc, Fuel/Gas); fabricating with steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast aluminum.

Special Conditions of Employment

Valid California driver’s license; participate in DMV pull notice program.

Valid Class B Commercial license with passenger endorsement and satisfactory driving record; license must enable driving passenger vehicles over 26,001 GVWR and carrying 20+ passengers.

Must obtain within 6 months of hire a valid California Class B license and participate in DOT drug testing program.

Ability to lift, push, or move parts and equipment; ability to work overtime, on-call, and shift work as needed.

Vaccination policy compliance.
