The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications from qualified DOT employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintainer 3 (Skilled Bridge) in the Darien Bridge Maintenance facility.

Position Highlights Monday‑Friday, Full‑time (40 hours/week), First Shift (7:30 am‑4:00 pm)

Responsibilities

Perform skilled carpentry and masonry repairs to maintain and repair the Department’s bridge infrastructure within District 3.

Operate and maintain construction, maintenance and repair equipment, including concrete saws, core drills, flail mowers, skid‑steer loaders, snow removal trucks, and piping equipment.

Perform truck and equipment duties such as elevation platform handling, line marking, pavement finishing, and heavy equipment operation.

Assist a Transportation Maintenance Manager in preparing and checking reports, wildlife hazard control, and radio monitoring and communication.

Stand by for emergency duties including snow and ice removal and other assigned services.

Work at heights on bridges and maintain safe working conditions including use of respirators and safety goggles as required.

Participate in asbestos removal and other hazardous materials programs as required by EPA guidelines.

Position Requirements

Harness and fall protection training and compliance with the Department’s Respirator Policy.

Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank endorsement (Class A or B).

Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) at the time of interview.

Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties and winter overtime (Nov 1‑Apr 30).

30‑mile residency requirement from the posted job location.

Ability to bring a copy of the Master Application to the interview and participate in a skill evaluation practicum.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, including operation and care of mechanical equipment.

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade may substitute for the general experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

Working‑knowledge in skilled carpentry and masonry.

Working‑knowledge of construction repairs.

Experience operating various construction equipment and tools.

Experience working with heights.

Experience with bridge structural repairs.
