Overview

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Our MISSION is to help ensure the security of the United States and its allies by providing high-hazard experimentation and incident response capabilities through operations, engineering, education, field, and integration services and by acting as environmental stewards to the Site’s Cold War legacy. Our vision is to be the user site of choice for large-scale, high-hazard, national security experimentation, with premier facilities and capabilities below ground, on the ground, and in the air. The 2,750+ MSTS professionals are called upon to innovate, collaborate, and deliver on some of the more difficult nuclear security challenges facing the world today.

Responsibilities

Prepare and check engineering design documents, including drawings, specifications, calculations, and specialized analyses.

Research, interpret, and apply national consensus codes and standards and DOE Orders and Standards.

Coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines, facility managers, project managers, and project engineers.

Determine and apply appropriate design requirements and criteria to satisfy customer needs.

Be responsible for design aspects for and coordinate execution of projects over the entire lifecycle (initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing).

Perform civil/structural calculations with or without the assist of computer aided software.

Contribute to reports and technical evaluations.

Build teaming relationships with technical and other company organizations.

Perform site walk downs as required.

Complete engineering tasks as described in engineering work plans.

Provide input during design activities on constructability, preferred construction materials, and parts or items to be incorporated into the design.

Ensure processes and deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.

Evaluate processes, procedures, and work instructions to improve performance.

Create and update standard structural installation details.

Make determination of code applicability for both nuclear and non-nuclear applications.

Attend Tier 1 meetings and be an active participant in the discussions.

Promptly correct or report any hazard or potential hazard to supervision.

Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees

Or Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering

Or for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)

Or Professional Engineer license

Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.

Licensed Professional Engineer in Civil or Structural Engineering is preferred.

Ability to employ independent judgment and apply professional knowledge to ensure that assignments are completed efficiently and on time.

Possess interpersonal communication skills to interact in an effective, positive, and professional manner.

Possess knowledge of industry standard software applications.

The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).

Schedule will be 4/10s, Monday-Thursday (Subject to Change).

May need to be able to work occasional overtime, if needed, due to project schedules.

Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Department of Energy Q Clearance: This position will be cleared to Q level. Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted; applicant may be subject to a Federal background investigation and reinvestigations, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Compensation

Annual salary range for this position is: $99,340.80 - $149,011.20.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
