Base pay range: $147,000.00/yr – $156,000.00/yr.
Job Description Summary The Mechanical Inspector will support LAWA's Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA's Capital Improvement Program.
Key Responsibilities
Inspects construction of a wide variety of airport improvements and utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements for work.
Conducts daily inspections of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects.
Prepares comprehensive daily inspection reports documenting all observed construction activities.
Verifies contractor compliance with local and national electrical codes, mechanical and plumbing codes, and LAWA-specific standards.
Tracks and documents time‑and‑material work, field changes, and job quantities.
Assists in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
Supports special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third‑party agencies.
Required Certifications & Training
Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector.
Proof of Cal‑OSHA 30‑hour training within the last four years.
LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
Fall protection and harness training.
Confined space entry training.
Preferred Certifications & Experience
Additional current ICC certifications as Electrical and Plumbing Inspector.
NFPA 70E standards training within the last three years.
Experience at the journeyman level as an electrician on public works, institutional, commercial, or industrial projects.
Plumbing experience (journeyman/master level) with progression into inspection.
Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large‑scale commercial, industrial or public buildings.
Experience overseeing compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.
Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies to ensure construction meets required standards.
Strong understanding of diverse code requirements.
Excellent communication and time‑management skills.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of project management information software such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam, etc.
Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic contract documents efficiently.
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) installations: domestic water and sewage, venting, fire sprinklers, HVAC systems, smoke control, mechanical ventilation, fire and life safety integration, lockout/tagout procedures, commissioning reports, underground utilities, electrical panels, lighting, and safety systems.
IT infrastructure installations: low‑voltage systems, door card readers, security cameras, P.A. systems, and communication cabling.
Work Conditions
Must be able to work any assigned shift – day, swing, or night.
Might be required to work day, swing, and night shifts.
Open to work modified schedules, including nights and weekends, as dictated by contractor activities.
Availability to work overtime as required.
