Job Overview Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in bridge design, construction, and maintenance. Ensures compliance with federal and state laws, policies, and standards. Responsible for preliminary engineering tasks, often under supervision.

Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex bridge design, construction, and maintenance work. Works independently on assignments; most unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex bridge engineering tasks. Sets own work plans and priorities; rarely refers issues to supervisors.

Transportation Engineer IV: Performs highly advanced bridge engineering tasks across multiple functional areas. Virtually self-supervising and assumes direct accountability for work product.

Essential Duties

Design bridge repairs and perform structural analysis on new or existing structures.

Develop and review engineering documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans.

Assist in reviewing shop drawings and lift plans prepared by fabricators and contractors.

Assist in developing specifications for special details and projects.

Make presentations and represent TxDOT.

Review designs and detailed drawings prepared by other engineers and technicians.

Review shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.

Drive to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests, and provide technical support.

Prepare formal reports or condition surveys as necessary.

Coordinate trainings with District and Division personnel (and vendors as necessary) to promote in-house bridge maintenance efforts.

Transportation Engineer II: Performs all the above plus:

Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.

Represents the division at various meetings.

Transportation Engineer III: Performs all the above duties plus:

Serves as a primary help desk resource for routine technical and policy issues.

Updates, reviews, monitors, and reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and standard sheets.

Develops training courses and/or materials.

Represents the district/division at technical meetings and public hearings at local, state, federal and/or international levels.

Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of bridge construction and maintenance.

Transportation Engineer IV: Performs all the above duties plus:

Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.

Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors consultant compliance, and prepares and delivers written evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science. Bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience.

Transportation Engineer II: 5 years experience.

Transportation Engineer III: 6 years experience.

Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years experience.

Related graduate level education may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Licenses and Certification

Mandatory: Licensed Professional Engineer.

Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate (will be issued upon hire).

Professional engineers licensed in another state in the U.S. must obtain Texas license within six (6) months of hire.

Competencies Transportation Engineer I and II:

Structural engineering terminology, principles, practices, and methods.

Fatigue and fracture mechanics.

Applicable plans, specifications, and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.

Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures.

Bridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulations.

Bridge inspection and appraisal methods and procedures.

Materials design, specifications, and applications.

Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements.

Researching, analyzing, and interpreting policies and state and federal laws and regulations specific to functional area.

Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities.

Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long‑term deadlines.

Developing and giving presentations.

Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.

Transportation Engineer III and IV: Greater skill in all the above plus:

Speaking and presenting images and ideas clearly and engagingly.

Facilitating groups using effective communication methods, guiding group, defining objectives, staying on task and reaching consensus.

Exercise logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make decisions that support business objectives.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.

Crouching, bending body downward and forward while bending leg(s) and spine.

Climbing – ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc.

Close visual acuity – work includes data/figures, visual inspection of small defects/parts, using measurement devices, assembly of parts.

Repetitive motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Conditions of Employment

This job requires a pre‑employment physical.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for Safety Impact positions. Random drug testing applies.

Position Information TxDOT's Bridge Division is looking to hire a Bridge Construction and Maintenance Engineer I, II, III or IV based in Austin, TX. In the Bridge Division – Construction and Maintenance Branch, we work together to create in‑house plans to repair and preserve bridges, provide field construction support, train TxDOT districts to perform in‑house repairs, implement innovative solutions to complex problems, and respond to bridge emergencies.

Location: 6230 E Stassney Lane, Austin, TX 78744.

Salary ranges by level:

Transportation Engineer I: $65,104 – $96,000 yearly

Transportation Engineer II: $69,572 – $102,000 yearly

Transportation Engineer III: $76,530 – $113,300 yearly

Transportation Engineer IV: $84,182 – $124,600 yearly
