The Locksmith is part of Vanderbilt University Maintenance and Operations (VUMO) and is a key contributor responsible for duties as needed to all levels of stakeholders across the University. This individual will cut duplicate or new keys using key‑cutting machines, impressions, or code key machines; install locks and closers in doors; disassemble electrical and mechanical locking devices; and maintain locking systems by repairing and replacing worn springs, tumblers, and other parts.

About the Work Unit:

Plant Operations provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.

Key Functions and Expected Performance

Interprets Master Keying Guide; uses appropriate discretion and special knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the university's master key system while meeting customer requests.

Installs, services, and repairs various types of locks and security devices.

Installs and repairs door hardware and hydraulic closing fixtures.

Disassembles locks; repairs and replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.

Cuts new or duplicate keys and stamps with identification.

Issues keys and maintains records of keys issued and returned.

Maintains records of work performed.

Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains both mechanical locking and electronic key card systems.

Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Relationships This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Education and Certifications

A high school diploma or GED is necessary.

Valid driver license is required; must maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Experience and Skills

Excellent mechanical skills.

Ability to assess and communicate door needs.

Familiarity with desktop/laptop/portable computer and smartphones.

Providing excellent customer service.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Ability to continuously learn and use new products and skills.

3–5 years of experience in an appropriate technical field.

Ability to engage and communicate with all levels of management and staff.

Ability to install and maintain locks, related hardware, and key systems.

Proficiency in using common hand tools, machine tools, and locksmith trade tools.

Preferred: ability to key and rekey standard and master key systems.

Preferred: ability to generate and/or expand a bitting list.

Preferred: knowledge of access control systems, including diagnosis and repair of electric strikes, electronic panic hardware, electromechanical locks, and magnetic locks.

Preferred: knowledge of job‑related software associated with electronic hardware.

Preferred: ability to maintain and repair various automatic door operators.
