Position Summary Under general supervision, installs, inspects, tests and performs repairs on refrigeration equipment, domestic water coolers, air conditioners, and related systems.

Responsibilities

Inspect refrigeration equipment, water coolers, ice makers, freezer units, etc., to ensure proper functioning. Read thermometers and gauges and record readings.

Clean assigned equipment and change filters as required.

Adjust refrigerant flow and suction valves to maintain desired compression and temperature levels. Operate the reclaimer to drain and refill equipment with refrigerant as needed.

Perform preventive maintenance and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems; seal refrigerant leaks, change compressors, replace faulty valves, humidistats, thermostats, pumps, and other components as necessary.

Isolate defects in refrigeration equipment control systems by testing wiring, switches, motors, and other components using ammeters, voltmeters, ohmmeters; test operation of humidistats and thermostats with electrical meters and test lamps.

Evaluate pressure, temperature, wattage, and gallons‑per‑minute data and install appropriate refrigeration and air‑conditioning equipment, water coolers, refrigerators, etc.

Mount compressors and condenser units.

Install evaporator units inside freezing units, refrigerated rooms, or air‑duct systems, ensuring cost‑effective operation through evaluation of airflow, duct size, and related factors.

Perform oxygen, arc, and acetylene welding to fabricate metal fittings and cut, fit, and install pipes and tubing as necessary.

Assist other maintenance personnel with preventive maintenance, repairs, installation of new equipment, and assist in snow removal and grounds care as needed.

Requirements

High school or technical school education plus six months to one year of specific preparation outside of school, certified by EPA to purchase and handle refrigerants.

Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to work with refrigerated and related equipment and procedures, typically acquired through one to two years of on‑the‑job experience.

Frequent use of independent judgment in installing, inspecting, testing, and repairing refrigeration equipment.

Ability to maintain sustained concentration and attention to detail while working with refrigeration equipment.

Responsibility for materials and equipment, with moderate potential cost in case of improper handling.

Annual education related to specialty certifications and standards may be required due to DNV and TJC accreditation.
