The City of Fountain Valley Public Works Department is seeking a Water System Operator to join the team. This position performs skilled and technical tasks to ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of water production facilities. The ideal candidate will monitor, maintain, and improve the city’s water systems to provide safe and reliable water to the community. Key responsibilities include: Use SCADA to remotely monitor and operate the water system and sewer and storm drain stations and control systems equipment. Install, repair, overhaul, operate, and maintain water pumps and pump motors. Monitor water production, storm drain pumping, and sewage lift station facilities; check pressure, levels, and status of pumping and treatment equipment. Inspect, maintain, and repair facility equipment including large electric motors, natural gas engines, pumps, wells, tanks, controls, and treatment equipment. Read recorders, meters, and gauges and perform field computations for equipment adjustments. Excellent Benefits

In addition to the key responsibilities listed above, the position performs the following duties: Operate, maintain, repair, and set dosages on chemical injection equipment and conduct laboratory tests for water treatment. Operate, overhaul, and maintain on-site hypochlorite chlorine generation and sodium fluoride equipment and appurtenances. Assist with training in operation of production systems, storm drain stations, sewage lift stations, and SCADA. Maintain and repair supporting structures, vaults, fencing, sites, and appurtenances at facilities. Maintain pressure reducing, pressure relief, and pressure-sustaining valves and related pilot controls. Collect water samples for quality monitoring, reporting, and customer requests. Assist in controlling and repairing broken water mains, services, and meters. Assist with Edison efficiency tests on water pumps, including measuring capacity, total load, and horsepower input. Prepare reports and maintain records. Other Job-Related Duties

Maintain Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBA) at production sites and City vehicles. Provide technical oversight over Water Maintenance Workers and Temporary Laborers as needed. Assist in overhaul of large stationary engines. Disconnect and restore water services. Perform water customer service duties as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Education: High school graduation or equivalent. College-level coursework in Water Utility Science or related field is highly desirable. Experience: A minimum of one year of experience in maintenance and repair of water distribution or production facilities (municipal setting preferred). Municipal water production operations experience is highly desirable. Licenses and Certifications: Valid California Class C Driver’s License required. Possession of SWRCB Grade II Water Distribution (D-2) Operator certification required at time of appointment. Possession of or ability to obtain within the probationary period SWRCB Grade III Water Distribution (D-3) Operator certification and SWRCB Grade I Water Treatment (T1) Operator Certification required within the probationary period. Backflow and cross-connection certifications are highly desirable. Maintain required licenses and certifications at all times. Special Requirements

Must be available for standby duty, holidays, and weekends as assigned, and subject to periodic call-out during off-time hours for emergency repairs. Additional Information
