Heating Plant Operator
Location: Hanover, NH
Schedule: Monday–Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm; Saturday/Sunday off (full time, 40 hours, 12 months per year)
Position purpose: The Heating Plant provides heating steam and co‑generates electricity on a 24‑hour basis for all of the College’s GPO and ORL buildings. The Plant Operator is responsible for the operation of the plant’s electrical generators and distribution system, emergency diesel generator, turbine auxiliaries, and oversight of all plant equipment and systems including steam flow.
Respond to after‑hours telephone requests from the College community.
Maintain station log book and communicate to appropriate Plant and/or FO&M personnel.
Monitor and report fire alarms, energy management system alarms, and equipment malfunctions.
Required Qualifications – Education and Experience
High School graduate plus 5+ years of experience in power plant maintenance or equivalent.
Any combination of education and experience that equals the above.
Required Qualifications – Skills and Knowledge
Five years of relevant power plant maintenance and boiler operations experience; or a post‑secondary technical degree in power plant operation; or equivalent.
Ability to pass an annual hearing test and participation in a hearing conservation program.
High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of high‑pressure steam boiler operation, turbine generators, and high‑voltage electrical distribution.
Completion of plant operator training guidelines.
Knowledge of facility operating permits and emissions limits.
Computer literacy and proficiency with current boiler control methods.
Independent work with minimal supervision and effective communication with College personnel.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and flow diagrams.
Sound judgment and problem‑solving skills.
Good physical condition able to perform strenuous labor under extreme heat and work on ladders.
Willingness to work shift hours and overtime as required.
Completion of required safety trainings (Hazardous Waste, Spill Prevention, Driver Safety, Hazard Communication, Lock‑out/Tag‑out, Respirator Fit & Physical Exam, Confined Spaces).
Responsibilities
Start, stop and operate equipment safely.
Monitor plant operation via the Bailey Distributed Control System and local gauges.
Ensure compliance with operating permits, emissions limits, and procedures.
Respond to after‑hours calls.
Read and report energy management computer alarms and fire alarms.
Maintain a regular cleaning station and perform basic maintenance.
Record relay trips and log turbine room events.
Inspect equipment and write work orders.
Working Conditions
Work from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms.
Repeated bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and awkward positions.
Regular lifting up to 70 lb.
Indoor, outdoor, and bad weather environments with dust, smoke, fumes, and steam.
Exposure to extreme heat and noise.
Use of protective clothing (overalls, gloves, goggles, ear plugs, hard hat).
Use of breathing apparatus if required.
Exposure to high‑voltage electrical and high‑temperature steam.
