The Molecular Technical Supervisor is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the molecular diagnostics section, ensuring that all testing is accurate, reliable, and compliant with CAP, CLIA, and other regulatory requirements. This position provides leadership in method validation, quality assurance, staff competency, and proficiency testing, while collaborating with the Laboratory Director and Medical Director to maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice. Responsibilities
Provide technical supervision and scientific oversight of all molecular diagnostic testing, including sample processing, nucleic acid extraction, PCR/RT-PCR, sequencing, and related methodologies. Approve, validate, and periodically review all test procedures, performance specifications, and standard operating procedures to ensure CAP and CLIA compliance. Establish, monitor, and maintain quality control and quality assurance programs to ensure accuracy and reproducibility of test results. Oversee proficiency testing enrollment, result review, and documentation of corrective actions. Conduct and document competency assessments and continuing education programs for testing personnel. Monitor equipment calibration, maintenance, and performance verification; ensure timely corrective actions for deviations. Ensure remedial actions are implemented and documented when test systems do not meet expected performance standards. Collaborate with the Laboratory Director and Medical Director on strategic initiatives, new assay implementation, and regulatory inspections. Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation to demonstrate ongoing compliance with CAP/CLIA standards. Act as a technical resource for laboratory staff and healthcare providers, offering expertise in molecular diagnostics. All other duties as assigned. Education And Experience
Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, molecular biology, genetics, or related field required; master’s or doctoral degree strongly preferred. ASCP certification in Molecular Biology (MB) or equivalent required (or eligible). Minimum 4 years of experience supervising high-complexity molecular testing as defined by CAP/CLIA. Strong understanding of CAP, CLIA, and quality management systems. Prior experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and molecular instrumentation required. Skills And Abilities
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to coach and develop staff. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities in molecular testing workflows. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across clinical and administrative teams. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and regulatory compliance. Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, and move freely in the laboratory environment. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Manual dexterity and steady hands for pipetting and molecular procedures. Comfortable working with biological specimens and laboratory chemicals. Seniority level
