Job Title CALTRANS HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

– Caltrans District 3

Job Summary The incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment, constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various equipment used in the Department's fleet. They will complete records and reports, use computers for related tasks, assist in instructing helpers, apprentices, or other employees, and be responsible for the safe use of materials and tools.

Incumbents must possess a valid Class C driver license.

Responsibilities

Work under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker.

Construct, inspect, diagnose, repair, and service equipment used in the department’s fleet.

Maintain accurate records and reports, and use computer equipment for related tasks.

Assist in instructing or directing helpers, apprentices, or other employees.

Assume responsibility for reasonable safeguards and proper use and handling of materials, tools, equipment, and facilities, always using personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work outside and travel to field mechanic locations or highway maintenance stations as needed, tolerating inclement weather (severe cold or heat).

Assist with the daily operation of the shop and perform other duties as assigned.

Accept job assignments that may include travel, rotation, changes of shift, work hours, and workdays.

Qualifications

Valid Class C driver license.

Experience and/or education that meets the Minimum Requirements as stated in the Class Specification.

Ability to work in inclement weather, support emergency or declared emergency situations, and work flexible hours as necessary.

Knowledge of road maintenance equipment and related tools.

Strong interpersonal skills to instruct or give direction to helpers and apprentices.

Working Conditions Incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment, exposing to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, and varied temperatures. Employees may be required to travel, rotate shifts, and may be subject to mandatory overtime.

Benefits Employees in this classification may be eligible for a Recruitment Hire-Above Minimum Authorization salary rate, additional monthly pay differentials for recruitment and retention, and other standard Civil Service employee benefits.

Eligibility & Examination Eligibility may be determined by the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic exam. Candidates without current eligibility should be on the state examination list.
