role. The position is PER DIEM (ON CALL) with a flexible schedule. Candidates are sought throughout NYC, including Long Island and Staten Island.
Job Summary Based on training, experience and qualifications, the Behavioral Health Specialist may be called upon to provide one or more of the following services to children and families enrolled in the specific services. The specialist must meet the minimum educational requirements and qualifications necessary for each service as documented.
General Responsibilities
Prevocational Services : Individually designed to prepare a youth (age 14 or older) to engage in paid work, volunteer work or career exploration. Services focus on teaching skills for success in any work environment, fostering appropriate work habits, acceptable job behaviors, and learning job production requirements.
Respite (Planned and Crisis) :
Planned respite provides short‑term relief for family/caregivers, allowing them to support the child/youth’s functional, mental‑health/substance‑use or health‑care issues while they receive direct care and supervision. It may occur during the day or overnight in short‑term increments, supporting the plan of care goals.
Crisis respite is a short‑term care and intervention strategy used when a child/youth experiences a mental‑health/substance‑use crisis, medical crisis or trauma that creates a risk for escalation or loss of functioning. It may be initiated via crisis intervention or referrals from emergency rooms, schools, or care managers.
Supported Employment : Provides ongoing support to participants who, because of their disabilities, need intensive support to obtain and maintain an individual job in competitive or customized employment, or self‑employment, in an integrated workforce. Objectives include sustained paid employment at or above the minimum wage in a setting that meets personal and career goals.
Caregiver/Family Advocacy and Support Services : Enhances the child/youth’s ability to function as part of a caregiver/family unit and equips caregivers with techniques and information to respond to the participant’s needs related to their disability. Services also support family and collateral contacts with tailored information and strategies.
Community Habilitation : Assists children/youth with developmental, medical or behavioral disabilities in acquiring self‑help, socialization and adaptive skills necessary for successful functioning.
Additional Responsibilities
Oversee and execute all program requirements as assigned.
Document all necessary information on each child to bill for services accordingly.
Participate in treatment team meetings to provide updates.
Report all Serious Reportable and Recordable Incidents to Supervisor.
Comply with Abbott House’s policies, procedures, and reporting, documenting, and billing time frames.
Demonstrate knowledge of evidence‑based practice and complex trauma.
Perform any other related duties as required.
Physical Requirements
Regularly stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, talk and listen, and taste or smell. Frequent walking is required.
Occasionally keep balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
Use computers, fax, copier, scanner and other office equipment.
Speak, read and write fluently in English; write with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Lift 0–25 lbs frequently, 25–50 lbs occasionally, and over 50 lbs rarely.
Push/pull 0–25 lbs frequently, 26–45 lbs occasionally, and over 45 lbs rarely.
Sit, stand and walk throughout the work day.
Work environment: primarily office; moderate noise from program participants, occasional increased noise from yelling or screaming.
Qualifications
Prevocational Services: AA/AS plus 1 year experience or BA plus 1 year experience.
Respite Services: High School Diploma with experience.
Supported Employment Services: AA/AS plus 1 year experience or BA/BS plus 1 year experience.
Caregiver/Family Advocacy and Support Services: BA with 2 years experience or MA with 1 year experience.
Community Habilitation: High School Diploma with experience.
