The Family Birthing Center departments provides comprehensive birthing and maternity care to families in Central Oregon.

Position Overview

The Certified Surgical Tech (CST) functions as a member of the Surgical Services Perioperative Team. The CST performs delegated duties consistent with their scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery. The CST may perform the duties of Scrub Technologist and/or Second Assisting Technologist in accordance with Oregon Law (ORS 676.870). The CST maintains a safe and sterile environment by implementing technical and aseptic practices according to AORN Standards and St. Charles Health System (SCHS) policies and procedures. Practices as a CST while observing the recommendations of AST and their governing organizations. This position does not directly manage other caregivers.

Essential Functions and Duties

Functions as a member of the Surgical Services Perioperative team to assure patient care is accomplished in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner. Ensures the perioperative regime for each patient is implemented as prescribed by the physician. Prepares the operating room and obtains necessary equipment; drapes and covers operating and instrument tables; lays out supplies and equipment for scheduled or emergency cases. Assists and procures appropriate equipment, checks for malfunctions, and makes needed adjustments. Maintains a safe environment by following SCHS policies and procedures related to exposure risk. Follows established policies and procedures for counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments. Participates in Pre-Brief, Time-out, and Debrief of the surgical procedure. Assists with positioning of the patient on the operating table when necessary. Gowns and glovessurgeon(s) and assistants; assists in preparing and draping a sterile field. Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon; prepares sterile dressings and maintains highest standard of sterile technique. Anticipates needs of the surgical team and promotes efficient flow of the operative procedure. Maintains patient care focus and minimizes distractions. Performs counts and specimen/tissue care as per established procedures. Participates in cleaning the operating room and handling contaminated instruments per decontamination and sterilization policies. Performs duties as Second Assist Technologist when required (e.g., holds retractors or instruments as directed). Delivers customer service and patient care that is timely, efficient and accurate. Participates with team in educating patients and families about the surgical experience and fosters a healing environment. Performs stand-by call as assigned; varies by department. Supports organizational vision, mission and lean principles; contributes to a safe environment and professional ethics. Complies with laws, regulations, policies and procedures; protects confidentiality and reports violations as appropriate. May perform additional duties of similar complexity as required or assigned.

Education

Required:

Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited program, ABHES-accredited program, military surgical technologist program, or a combination of education and experience. Preferred:

Liscensure/Certification/Registration

Required:

Current NBSTSA Surgical Technologist Certification or current NCCT Surgical Technologist Certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers. Preferred:

NBSTSA Surgical First Assistant Certification (CSFA).

Experience

One (1) year experience in a high-volume, multi-specialty operating room.

Personal Protective Equipment

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE to perform the job safely.

Experienced in all aspects of aseptic technique; knowledgeable regarding instrumentation, equipment and supply needs for all surgical procedures.

Physical Requirements

Standing and walking, keyboard use, ability to speak clearly and hear normal speech (75% or more). Frequent sitting and lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-25 pounds (50%). Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, lifting 25-50 pounds (25%). Rarely climbing stairs; never climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area).

Exposure and Safety Exposure to elemental factors: Rarely wet/slippery areas, chemicals; Never heat, cold, noise, dust, vibration, uneven surfaces. Blood-Borne Pathogen (BBP) exposure: Risk for exposure to BBP. This position is within the OFNHP bargaining unit and subject to union membership terms in the collective bargaining agreement.
