Summary: Assesses students requiring the direct services of a registered nurse. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.
Salary:
$156/day Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs. Instruct teachers on screening students for health defects. Administer medication and treatment prescribed by physicians. Conduct parent conferences and maintain liaison between physicians, parents and staff. Make recommendations to primary care physicians on health needs of individual students. Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records for all students requiring nursing intervention. Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters. Assume authority in the absence of a physician for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness. Administer first aid in accordance with established procedures. Implement board policy on exclusion and readmission of students related to infectious and contagious diseases. Conduct training for students related to handicap, health and hygiene. Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools. Prepare statistical reports as required by the Department of Education, Department of Human Services and Superintendent. Help in the formation of school health policies, goals and objectives. Prepare a budget for school health needs. Serve on the Pupil Evaluation Team when student health problems are involved. Arrange for exclusion of students related to potential infestations and contagious diseases. Monitor current immunization levels of all students as required by Maine law. Participate in the health aspects of kindergarten registration. Manage school health services under the direction of the Superintendent and Principal, in compliance with district policy. Provide information to the School Committee and school administrators as needed to develop school health policies and procedures. Provide health-related training to school personnel. Provide preventive health services to students including health education, screening, consultation and referrals. Provide nursing assessments and nursing diagnoses and develop plans of care for students needing health and nursing interventions. Implement interventions within the plan of care directly, through delegation, or through oversight and coordination of other responsible staff based on health, safety and welfare of the student. Coordinate in-school health care with the student’s primary care physician, the school-based health center, and other providers as necessary. Supervisory Responsibilities
