Description

A

Carpenter

constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures made of wood, metal, wallboard, etc., using hand tools and power tools, in compliance with local building codes. They focus on maintaining production and quality standards to complete projects and exceed customer expectations. The role involves studying blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine material requirements, such as metal studs or fiberboard, and the dimensions of structures or fixtures. Carpenters select specified materials, prepare layouts with tools like tape measures and framing squares, and mark cutting and assembly lines. They shape materials to prescribed measurements, assemble, cut, shape, and fasten them using appropriate fasteners, and verify the trueness of structures before completion. They also apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative panels to ceilings and walls, and fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, weather stripping, trim, and hardware. Carpenters are responsible for the quality and production of their work, typically reporting to a foreman or lead. They must work safely and maintain a safe work environment. Precision is crucial, requiring skills in shop mathematics, problem-solving, planning, tool selection, and visualizing objects from drawings. Their duties can vary frequently. Physically, carpenters must be able to climb scaffolds and ladders, handle objects and materials, lift up to 100 pounds, and perform tasks like stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and seeing clearly (with or without correction). Note: In the San Francisco Bay area, wages range from $34.26/hour for entry-level apprentices to $57.10/hour for Journeymen, based on union scale per the current collective bargaining agreement.
