Overview The City of Columbus, Columbus Water and Power, Division of Water, is accepting applications for a vacant full-time Engineer I position. This position will be responsible for project management duties associated with capital improvement projects, and reviewing proposed plans and specifications affecting the water distribution system to ensure compliance with the Division of Water practices and standards.

Responsibilities

Act as engineer-in-charge of small construction and/or maintenance projects; review plans and designs prepared by staff and consulting engineers for conformance to plans, contract specifications, regulations, codes, and sound engineering principles. Represent the division at meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, regional planning and technical committees, commissioners, citizen groups, engineering groups, and other City departments; prepare preliminary and final plans and specifications for minor projects; review and perform studies or additional research to evaluate engineering solutions.

Serve as liaison to and communicate information with affected groups such as City departments, inspectors, contractors, developers, design consultants, utility companies, or other participants pertaining to specific engineering projects; stay abreast of current engineering principles.

Qualifications

Valid State of Ohio professional engineer (PE) license.

Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Salary range: $37.02-$55.52 per hour.

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing entry-level professional engineering work; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Acts as engineer-in-charge of small construction and/or maintenance projects;

Assigns and evaluates work of professional and technical staff;

Checks work accomplished by subordinates for quality and quantity by using pre-established standards and policies;

Prepares preliminary and final plans and specifications for minor projects; reviews and performs studies or additional research to evaluate engineering solutions;

Reviews and investigates requests and complaints received from the public; recommends corrective measures;

Inspects engineering projects for conformance to plans and specifications;

Serves as liaison to and communicates information with affected groups such as City departments, inspectors, contractors, developers, design consultants, utility companies, or other participants pertaining to specific engineering projects;

Assists in the planning and preparation of proposals and specifications for major engineering projects;

Stays abreast of current engineering principles;

Operates a computer and mapping software to draw and review maps and plans;

May do on-site investigations prior to a project;

May represent the division at meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, regional planning and technical committees, commissioners, citizen groups, engineering groups, and other City departments;

May direct or personally engage in field surveys; makes plan-in-hand inspections of ongoing projects.

Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer.

Specialization in the discipline for which appointment is being made may be required for some positions and will be incorporated in the job postings, as appropriate.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
