Job Summary Construction Inspector

– The Construction Inspector is responsible for inspecting and overseeing the construction and reconstruction of public infrastructure projects—including paving, water, sewer, and drainage systems—to ensure compliance with City specifications, standards, and applicable regulations. This role safeguards the quality and safety of municipal projects, maintains accurate field documentation, and ensures timely communication between stakeholders.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Inspect all phases of public works construction (streets, drainage, water, wastewater).

Monitor construction sites to ensure adherence to approved plans, specifications, and safety standards.

Conduct right‑of‑way inspections and respond to related permit requests.

Verify line, grade, elevation, alignment, and material conformance.

Maintain detailed inspection logs, pay quantity reports, and as‑built drawings.

Coordinate field testing (soil compaction, water/sewer pressure tests, etc.).

Attend pre‑construction meetings and coordinate with contractors, engineers, and developers.

Ensure stormwater pollution prevention (SW3P) measures and erosion control compliance.

Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve field‑related issues or concerns.

Perform final inspections, prepare punch lists, and assist in project closeouts.

Ensure traffic control plans are properly implemented and maintained on job sites.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and interpret civil engineering plans, blueprints, and specifications.

Knowledge of public works construction methods, materials, and applicable safety codes.

Ability to inspect and evaluate work related to streets, utilities, drainage, and grading.

Skilled in maintaining accurate records and preparing detailed reports.

Strong communication skills to interact professionally with contractors, engineers, City staff, and the public.

Ability to identify safety hazards and respond effectively to construction‑related emergencies.

Proficient in basic computer applications (email, reporting systems, etc.).

Ability to work independently and manage multiple field assignments efficiently.

Education, Training & Experience Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.

Associate's degree or technical coursework in construction inspection, civil engineering, or a related field preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in municipal construction inspection, utility installation, or public works projects required.

Four (4) or more years of combined experience and training preferred.

Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License required.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Work performed in both office and outdoor construction environments, including exposure to loud noise, dust, uneven terrain, and extreme weather conditions. The role requires frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and entering confined spaces such as manholes and trenches. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, push and pull objects, and perform physical tasks involving coordination, balance, and repetitive motion. Some duties may require working at heights or on slippery or uneven surfaces. Office tasks may involve extended periods of sitting and use of a computer.
