West Des Moines Water Works is accepting applications for Water Distribution Specialist. This position will perform maintenance, installation and repair of water distribution system. Performs emergency repairs and other related work as assigned. Emergency repairs or related work may include day, evening, night, weekends, short notice, and holidays or any combination. Duties and Responsibilities:
Inspects, maintains, repairs and replaces water distribution system including water mains, fire hydrants, valves, and other components; requires the selection and operation of appropriate equipment. Operates heavy construction equipment including backhoe and end loader. Documents in written and electronic format information on valve and hydrant condition, maintenance activities, distribution mapping, and other associated distribution operations. Under system pressure, makes water main taps using a variety of tapping and side cut machines. Excavates and repairs service pipes and curb valves. Cuts, fits, lays, and repairs water mains and lines; clean and flushes water mains; repairs mains, valves, and hydrants; installs, removes, and repairs services of various sizes. Delivers hang notices to customer premises when required. Locates water mains, system appurtenances, and service pipes when required.
Provides general labor at the water treatment plant and distribution system and arranges for maintenance, repair and/or replacement of necessary distribution facilities, when required. Performs site restoration including compaction, landscaping, and concrete work. Follows safety procedures in accordance with Water Works rules and procedures. Education/Experience High School Graduate or equivalent Three years of experience in heavy construction equipment operation preferred. Licenses and Certification Possess at appointment, or obtain within 6 months, certification as Iowa Water Distribution Operator Grade 1. Incumbent shall obtain certification as Iowa Water distribution Operator Grade 2 within three years of hiring. Possess or obtain within 30 days of appointment, an Iowa Commercial Driver’s License for vehicles operated by West Des Moines Water Works. Once this license is obtained for the first time, continuous possession of the license is required. Must continuously possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License, prior to obtaining the Iowa Commercial Driver’s License. Other Information: Skills:
Employees in this job classification may, on an individual basis, be offered on-the-job training (including safety considerations) for operation and maintenance of the Water Works backhoe and/or end loader. When, in the sole opinion of the Water Works, an individual has acquired the appropriate knowledge and skill, he/she may be designated to operate the backhoe and/or end loader under controlled conditions. Attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to work safely, efficiently, and independently, and as part of a team, without constant direct supervision. Ability to work under routine or emergency conditions. Ability to communicate with the public in a positive and effective manner. Ability to operate and properly repair a variety of pipes, valves, fittings, and hydrants. Working Conditions:
Frequent standing, walking. Occasionally climbs and descends ladders. Occasionally squats, bends over, and kneels for extended periods of time. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 lbs. and operate a jack hammer on a regular basis. Ability to read, interpret, and understand blueprints and construction drawings. Constant dexterity, feeling, hearing, near site acuity, depth perception, color vision, field of vision, concentration, and judgement. Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handing, talking, far site acuity, and writing ability. Work conditions which may include extreme temperatures, humidity, noise intensity level, darkness/poor lighting, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Occasionally works extended periods of time without sleep. Occasionally works in permit required confined spaces. Constant use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including hardhat, steel toe boots, eye protection, gloves, and other equipment determined necessary. Frequent exposure to vibrating equipment, such as jackhammer, quickie saw, Hotsy power washer, hydraulic hammer drill, and vactor.
