Structural Bridge Design Engineer – South Portland, ME LJB Engineering is a national, multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm with four main business lines: Transportation, Land Development/Public Utilities, Buildings Structural Design, and Safety/Fall Protection Design/Installation. Our diverse expertise serves clients in all 50 U.S. states and several countries.

We are currently seeking a motivated professional to join our South Portland, Maine office. In this role you will have an immediate impact on our bridge practice, working independently and as part of a team. Annual Compensation:

$81,000 – 120,000 based on experience, certifications, and regional market standards

Essential Functions:

Collaborate with a team on structural analysis and design of various bridge types, including steel beams, prestressed concrete beams, concrete slabs, pedestrian bridges, culverts, retaining walls, grade separations, stream crossings, bridge hydraulic analysis, rehabilitation, feasibility studies, structure type studies, load ratings, railroad bridges, and design‑build projects.

Lead bridge projects as the Bridge Task Coordinator, managing project schedules, tasks, and deliverables, ensuring alignment with client goals and deadlines.

Provide structural bridge design and plan production support to teams across different office locations.

Mentor junior engineers, fostering professional development while overseeing quality control for bridge design and plan sets.

Develop technical memorandums, specifications, feasibility studies, evaluations, and related reports, and contribute to proposal development.

Additional duties as assigned.

Essential Credentials:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, structural emphasis preferred.

PE license in Maine is a plus; successful candidates must have, or be able to obtain, a PE within 1 year of hire.

Qualifications:

5–10 years of hands‑on bridge/culvert design experience, covering the full lifecycle of bridge projects.

Direct experience with Maine DOT bridge design and a thorough understanding of Maine DOT design guidelines, procedures, and plan preparation.

Established relationships with Maine DOT, municipalities, and other state DOTs are preferred.

In‑depth knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation.

Experience with CAD plan development, MicroStation/ORD preferred.

Desired Skills:

Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage schedules, budgets, and client expectations.

Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers effectively.

High attention to detail and commitment to quality control in all project phases.
