Maintenance Technician Apprentice – 2nd Shift – Altavista, VA Location: Altavista, VA Plant | Shift: 2nd Shift | Salary: $18.65 – $37.35 per hour (variable by location)

Job Description The Maintenance Technician Apprentice will work in our Altavista nutrition manufacturing plant, operating and maintaining production equipment, troubleshooting issues, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires knowledge of mechanical, electrical and safety standards, and a willingness to learn and grow within Abbott’s global maintenance team.

Responsibilities

Operate all equipment safely, following LOTO procedures and plant policies.

Maintain equipment according to prescribed procedures, troubleshoot and repair to keep optimal performance.

Run, set up, and monitor production equipment, including pressure gauges, line speeds, conveyors, and electronic data systems.

Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) and directed maintenance (DM) tasks with senior technicians.

Work on hydraulic, pneumatic, packaging, pumping, electrical and mechanical systems, including rebuilding off‑line components.

Use Maximo CMMS to write and execute work orders, check out spare parts, and document completed work with accurate labor hours.

Ensure compliance with FDA, OSHA, and Abbott GMP and safety requirements.

Maintain hand tools, equipment, and spare parts inventory to prevent downtime.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma / GED and a 2‑year technical degree or equivalent experience.

Experience troubleshooting high‑speed filling, packaging equipment, and utilities.

Electrical and mechanical skills, ability to read blueprints and schematics, experience with pumps, motors, drives, and precision instruments.

Knowledge of Allen Brady PLCs, VFDs, DeviceNet; welding experience (MIG, TIG, Stick, plasma).

Prior manufacturing plant experience and strong written/verbal communication, self‑motivation, and multitasking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with RS Logic or ladder logic troubleshooting.

Knowledge of infant formula and nutrition regulatory requirements.

Previous FDA, cGMP, or highly regulated industry experience.

Familiarity with lean manufacturing, self‑directing teams, or statistical process management.
