Job Description and Duties The Transportation Engineer (Electrical) - TEE, under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer (Electrical), performs engineering duties and activities in the Division of Traffic Operations. Based on annual workload, delivery commitments, and seasonal needs, the incumbent may be assigned by the Department to a variety of positions in an office or field environment. A licensed incumbent at the journey level will be in responsible charge capacity. The TEE is responsible for the engineering support, project delivery, and commissioning of highway lighting, electrical and power systems, and Transportation Management Systems (TMS), also known as Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which includes various field elements, traffic signals and ramp meters. ITS is a complex electrical system composed of sensors, messaging signs, radios, cameras, communication system and software that transports data to the Transportation Management Center (TMC) where the data is processed for use by the TMC operators, external agencies, and traveling public. The TEE proposes electrical standards.
Qualifications Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications listed in the Classification Specification. For Pattern II applicants who require the TE Electrical in‑person written hurdle exam, please do not take the online exam prior to passing the written hurdle.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Electrical) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Special Requirements
Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Electrical) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
