The Respiratory Therapist (RT) is responsible for providing respiratory care services in accordance with physician orders and established hospital policies. The therapist evaluates, treats, and cares for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders across all age groups.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assess, plan, and implement respiratory care procedures for patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Administer medical gases, humidity, aerosol therapy, and medications via inhalation as prescribed. Set up, monitor, and manage mechanical ventilators and other life support equipment. Perform arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling, analysis, and interpretation; communicate critical values promptly. Conduct and interpret pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and other diagnostic respiratory procedures. Provide airway management including endotracheal suctioning, extubation assistance, and tracheostomy care. Monitor patient responses to therapy and make recommendations for changes to treatment plans. Respond to emergency situations including cardiac arrests, rapid responses, and code blues; assist with CPR and airway management. Educate patients and families about respiratory care plans, medication use, and home oxygen or nebulizer therapy. Ensure proper cleaning, maintenance, and calibration of respiratory equipment. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members to optimize patient outcomes. Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred). Licensure/Certification: Current state license or eligibility for licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential through the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred. Experience: Prior clinical experience in acute care, critical care, or emergency settings preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology. Competency in operating and troubleshooting ventilators, oxygen delivery systems, and other respiratory equipment. Ability to interpret ABG results and apply findings to patient care. Excellent communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. Commitment to patient safety, infection control, and quality improvement initiatives. Working Conditions
Hospital or clinical environment; exposure to infectious diseases, high-stress situations, and emergency care settings. Requires standing, walking, and occasional lifting of patients or equipment. May include day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Reports To
