Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, the Attorney Supervisor is responsible for supervising an attorney group in a variety of litigation and legal activities. The incumbent may also coordinate complex areas in the Legal Division, manage statewide responsibilities for the Department’s legislative program, and support the Assistant Chief Counsel as a legal advisor to top management. The Attorney Supervisor assists in preparing legislation, representing the Department before the Legislature, formulating legal policy, and reviewing the work of a major legal section. Eligibility requires a current score on the Attorney Supervisor exam. New to state civil services must be on the state examination list. Possession of a valid driver’s license when operating a State owned or leased vehicle. California Bar membership license required; copy of license to be provided prior to hiring. Completion of State Examination/Employment Application STD Form 678. Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required (maximum three pages, 12‑point Arial). Proficient knowledge of civil litigation laws, regulations, and applicable codes including California Code of Civil Procedure, Evidence Code, Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Government Code, and Insurance Code. Knowledge of public transportation law, federal aid statutes, and California transportation statutes. Evidence of supervisory experience or comparable management level in a Department, agency, or law firm. Expertise in civil and administrative litigation, including experience in California Superior Courts, Appellate Courts, Supreme Court, Federal District Courts, and Courts of Appeal. Ability to serve as a legal adviser to top management, including formulating legal policy and recommending strategic changes.
