Location Virtual – This position will be remote.
Role Summary The Oncology Data Specialist Certified is responsible for improving quality and outcomes for the Cancer Institute across the Central Florida Division. The ODS‑C completes case finding, abstracting, longitudinal patient follow‑up, and completes additional activities as needed to meet standards set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) as well as the Florida Cancer Data Systems (FCDS). The ODS‑C is responsible for ensuring all clinical elements accurately reflect the care provided by AdventHealth to allow for accurate state, federal, and public reporting. The ODS‑C serves as the Cancer Registry content expert to review patient diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes across the care continuum. The ODS‑C is responsible for alerting leadership of potential discrepancies in documentation or clinical care variation as part of ongoing performance improvement. Actively participates in continuing education in order to stay abreast of all applicable changes in the cancer industry with regards to coding and compliance.
Responsibilities
Serves as the Cancer Registry content expert responsible for identification of potential cancer registry candidates in strict compliance with standards and abstracting rules set by federal, state, and national accrediting body requirements.
Responsible for abstracting and clinically coding accurate patient data using appropriate cancer classification and coding systems as well as the most current cancer staging manuals, NCCN guidelines, and other pertinent reference manuals for all cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated by AdventHealth facilities.
Accountable for identifying any potential clinical variability or discrepancies of documentation that vary from national guidelines and outcome measures. These instances of trends are escalated to leadership to allow for timely intervention and feedback to front line clinicians.
Responsible for using critical thinking and independent judgement when conflicting clinical information is present to determine appropriate categorization of data elements and outcomes. This may include making clinical inferences with autonomy to accurately capture all required metrics.
Responsible for longitudinal tracking of cancer patients throughout the continuum at required intervals to maintain follow‑up and meet regulatory deadlines. (i.e. 30 days, 6 months, 1 year, etc.) Utilizes multiple avenues to obtain follow‑up such as phone calls, physician offices, written communication, and other sources.
Maintains professional work environment that is conducive to achieving accuracy and productivity goals. Completes independent validation of abstraction prior to registry submission. Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and meet registry harvest deadlines as required by national and regulatory bodies.
Responsible for seeking opportunities to maintain clinical expertise to incorporate latest developments and trends related to the cancer registry and national clinical guidelines. Attends educational, registry, or other conferences and training as appropriate.
Participates in Quality Assurance peer review, as a reviewer and reviewee. Timely correction of abstractions based on edits generated, or additional information/reports received to meet national and state registry guidelines.
Participates in special projects or initiatives as assigned, to improve the quality and outcomes for patients in the Cancer Institute.
Terms *Terms: 24‑month Full‑time Employment Contract Required for Sign‑On and Relocation
Required Experience
One (1) year of applicable experience required.
Internal candidates and rehires within 12 months of separation date are not eligible.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management
Completion of education program and/or work experience required for Oncology Data Specialist Certified, as defined by the National Cancer Registrars’ Association
Two (2) or more years of cancer registry abstraction experience
Current and valid Oncology Data Specialist certification
Strong understanding of complex medical conditions and surgical procedures to make clinical judgements on appropriateness of cancer care to measure quality and outcomes
Ability to make independent decisions when considering a broad range of internal/external clinical variables to adhere to national cancer guidelines
Thorough understanding of the Quality Measures as specified by the Commission on Cancer
Thorough knowledge of required resource references and utilization as specified in the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) Data Acquisition Manual (DAM)
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management
Two (2) or more years of abstracting experience in a CoC approved Cancer Program
Experience working in a quaternary care hospital system
Experience working in a multi‑campus healthcare system
Knowledge of various electronic medical records such as CRStar, Cerner, ARIA, OncoEMR
