The Town of Edgartown is hiring for two full‑time, year‑round positions to assist the safe and efficient operations of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system. Available positions are forty hours per week with competitive benefits and training opportunities. Training and experience in chemistry and engineering are preferred.
Plant Operator Handles skilled work in the operation and upkeep of the facility, including inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, responding to customer calls, and collecting and testing samples. Applicants need a high school diploma, a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, training or experience in chemistry or engineering, at least three years of related work, and a valid Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment License.

WASTEWATER DEPARTMENT DEFINITION Responsible for skilled technical work in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system, and other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system; performs daily inspections of plant equipment and machinery, and preventive maintenance; changes and lubricates bearings, belts, rotes, performs oil changes and repairs mechanical seals; monitors computer readings and inputs data; maintains trucks and other vehicles; records equipment checks; performs numerous repairs and records them; inspects and maintains grounds and facilities; assists septage haulers; performs lab tests related to septage; responds to inquiries and refers to appropriate personnel; collects samples and performs laboratory tests and records; provides response to customers for calls such as pump chamber alarms; inspects collection systems including lift stations and power generators; prepares for storms and responds in emergencies; may respond to odor control complaints; performs sewer connection inspections; required to work weekends, holidays, and on call 24/7 on a rotating basis; performs related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under general supervision. The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments. The employee refers unusual situations to the supervisor for advice and further instructions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School diploma or equivalent and training in a field such as chemistry, biology or engineering and three years of experience, preferably in municipal wastewater operations; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and licenses. Must possess a valid Grade 4 Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment License. Must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY & SKILL Knowledge of the principles and operational procedures of a wastewater treatment plant and sanitary sewer system; materials, methods and techniques essential to operation of a wastewater treatment facility; state and federal water pollution control regulations. Skill in troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and problem resolution. Ability to operate blowers, compressors, pumps, electrical panels, oxygen meters, PH meters and other equipment related to facility operations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Working conditions involve exposure to intermittent machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Includes work under typical shop conditions or outdoor work. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to emergency situations.
PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS Administrative work is performed in an office setting requiring sitting, standing, walking. In the field requires agility and physical strength, moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period. Work requires lifting heavy objects and carrying them, typically between 50‑100 pounds. Duties involve hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
