Overview

The City of Gastonia Development Services is seeking qualified candidates for a Construction Inspector position to join our team. As a Construction Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable building codes, ordinances, and regulations during the construction process. You will play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity, safety, and quality of construction projects within the City of Gastonia. The right candidate will perform intermediate-level technical work involving the inspection of construction projects for plan and specification compliance. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Construction Engineer/Right of Way Administrator. Other job functions and duties may be required as assigned. Percentages for each function are subject to fluctuations.

Responsibilities

Inspect water, sewer, stormwater, streets, driveways, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and related construction projects of contractors for compliance with plans, specifications and standards. Conduct inspections and tests on roadway, water and sewer line projects. Keep daily inspector’s diary of job progress. Inform builder of deviations or errors and advise as to corrective action. Inspect material received by contractors at project site to determine whether it meets the required specifications. Take samples of materials for quality testing. Keep records of tests. Inspect street cuts made for utility purposes. Investigate encroachments and assist in solving problems; assist in right-of-way negotiation and acquisition; receive and assist in resolving citizen complaints. Qualifications

General knowledge of construction practices, techniques, materials and equipment relating to public works and utilities General knowledge of engineering plans, specifications and drawings Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress Ability to detect errors in construction projects Ability to establish effective working relationships with City officials, contractors, property owners and others to effect satisfactory compliance with specifications and standards Ability to maintain accurate records Education and Experience

Construction Inspector I Minimally qualified starting pay: $26.82 hr. High School Diploma or equivalent Or any combination of education and experience Supplemental certificates or college-level course work in Civil Engineering technology and Construction Inspection preferred Construction Inspector II Minimally qualified starting pay: $28.16 hr. High School Diploma or equivalent Or any combination of education and experience Supplemental certifications or college-level course work in Civil Engineering technology and Construction Inspection preferred NCDOT QMS Roadway Technician Certification required NCDOT and ACI Concrete Field Technician Certification required Construction Inspector III Minimally qualified starting pay: $29.57 hr. High School Diploma or equivalent Or any combination of education and experience Supplemental certifications or college-level course work in Civil Engineering technology and Construction Inspection preferred NCDOT QMS Roadway Technician Certification required NCDOT and ACI Concrete Field Technician Certification required ITRE Road Scholar or APWA CPII Certification required NCDOT Soils Conventional Density Technician Certification required Special Requirements

Valid driver’s license NIMS IS-700 training within 12 months of hire Physical Demands / Work Environment

The physical activity of this position includes: Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet, legs, and/or hands and arms. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceed those required for ordinary locomotion. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. Kneeling Crouching Crawling Reaching Standing Walking Pulling Lifting Fingering Talking Hearing Repetitive Motions Grasping The physical requirements of this position include: Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects The visual acuity requirements, including color, depth perception, and field of vision, include: Close visual acuity to perform data preparation and analysis, computer terminal work, visual inspection, and use of measurement devices Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position include: Activities occur inside and outside Extreme cold and extreme heat conditions for extended periods Hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, scaffolding and high places, exposure to heat or chemicals Atmospheric conditions with fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation Claustrophobic environments such as crawl spaces and small enclosed rooms Narrow aisles or passageways Drug screening, criminal background, and reference checks are required.
