An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students the opportunity to understand day-to-day practice operations and gain hands-on clinical experience. NVA hospitals share a common environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and focused on exceptional service to animals and their people.
Responsibilities and learning opportunities include:
Gathering patient histories
Performing physical exams
Creating treatment plans and diagnostics
Dentistry services
Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures
Medical management of patients
Developing communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All DVM students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
DVM students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. The stipend amount for Andover Animal Hospital is $1,000. View the stipend details in the stipend program documentation.
